Research Fellow in Laser Spectroscopy of Cold Radioisotopes and Isomers
Physics and Astronomy
Duties and Responsibilities
The Laser Cooling group at UCL, led by Professor Ferruccio Renzoni, has recently setup a facility for laser cooling and trapping of caesium radioisotopes and isomers. The facility is located at the University of Jyvskyl (Finland). The group is currently working towards the demonstration of laser cooling and trapping of nuclear isomers. The aim of the project is to address an unsolved puzzle in nuclear physics by using an atomic physics approach (laser spectroscopy and cold atoms). A major component of the project will be the demonstration of laser cooling and trapping of caesium radioisotopes and isomers. The post-holder will typically spend about 30% of the time in Jyvskyl, and the rest of the time at UCL.
This position is funded for 2 years in the first instance, with a start date of March 1st 2022 or immediately thereafter.
Key Requirements
The successful applicant will have a PhD in Experimental Physics, and a solid background in laser cooling and trapping of neutral atoms. Candidates should also have excellent written and verbal communication.
Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6B (salary 32,217 -33,958 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
