Job description

The Faculty of Natural, Mathematical and Engineering Sciences (NMES), King’s College London, is seeking a committed, professional and motivated individual to join a large and talented technical team as a Laboratory Technician in the Department of Chemistry. NMES is ambitious and forward-thinking, with an outstanding reputation across a range of disciplines in Engineering, Science and Technology.

The successful candidate will join the growing Department of Chemistry at King’s College London where they will work as a member of the Faculty’s professional services team, providing high quality technical support to the Faculty based primarily at Guy’s Campus, but also covering Waterloo Campus, and if needed occasionally the Strand.

The role purpose is:

  • To use a broad range of technical or practical skills and a well-developed working knowledge of technical or scientific practices and procedures acquired through on-the-job experience and/or vocational training.
  • To provide colleagues with advice and guidance as required.
  • To be responsive to changing priorities and an evolving environment/context, maximising the eFFIciency of the technical support being provided and resolving problems as they arise.
  • To forge relationships with colleagues in the Faculty and university, in order to deliver the required support as well as to contribute to process development and the adoption of best practice.
  • To foster a stimulating, innovative and inclusive cultural environment across the Faculty enabling students and staff to thrive and develop, ensuring that processes and policies are visible, accessible and transparent.
  • To provide advice and guidance and, where appropriate, training on university policies, processes and where required, source information and support for colleagues to facilitate their work.
  • To actively engage in Continuing Professional Development and training initiatives, in line with the Technician Commitment.

More specifically, the post holder will:

  • Provide technical support to research groups in the Chemistry department. Having general oversight of the areas and ensuring a safe working environment.
  • Maintain both general laboratory equipment (pure water systems, autoclaves or dishwashers) and analytical equipment (UV and FTIR spectrophotometers, chromatographers, or atomic absorption spectrometer) and provide training where necessary to end users.
  • Write and review SOPs for general and analytical instruments ensuring good practice and lifespan of departmental facilities, training end users when necessary.
  • Act as Sustainability Lead in the laboratories at Britannia House, chairing the department’s sustainability group meetings, liaising with King’s Sustainability Group, managing LEAF applications/audits and working on sustainable initiatives with end users and the rest of the tech team to maintain our gold standard.
  • Manage reuse and recycling schemes and promote responsible energy consumption and water usage liaising with other departments and suppliers.
  • Manage the cold storage in the department.
  • Write and review Risk assessments for activities performed in the labs and with equipment. Also they are expected to personally adhere to any relevant risk assessments and safe working practices in the labs, wearing PPE as appropriate.
  • Maintain good housekeeping of all areas, working with research staff and students in the laboratories to ensure that they are in a clean and safe condition.
  • Receive deliveries from external suppliers (including hazardous chemicals/liquids, items on dry ice) and delivering them to end users. Manage goods receipt in the e-procurement system and assist the end users with queries with suppliers.
  • Be able to communicate well with other members of professional services/academic staff and work as part of a team. Also working independently when needed, planning and carrying out their own work, prioritising and being able to meet strict deadlines.
  • Perform routine laboratory duties such as keeping stocks of consumables at adequate levels, performing routine cleaning to keep all communal lab benches tidy and free of chemicals, and to ensure that the laboratories are kept in a fit state for projects to be undertaken.
  • Ensure that gas cylinders, liquid nitrogen, dry ice are delivered and available as required by the research groups.
  • Support the technical team in different activities including biological and chemical waste disposal, laundry collection, running the in-house stores and stocks checks and maintenance of other laboratory equipment.
  • Under the direction of the line manager, assist with aspects of work within the teaching laboratories, based on the Waterloo campus when needed and giving technical support across other campuses if required.
  • Attend Faculty and Campus professional services meetings as required to share good practice and receive/disseminate information.

This post will be offered on an indefinite contract

This is a full-time post – 100% full time equivalent

Key responsibilities

  • To provide technical support to research groups in the Chemistry department.
  • To maintain departmental equipment – general and analytical -, troubleshoot and train users.
  • To act as Sustainability Lead for the research laboratories at Britannia House.
  • To manage deliveries from external suppliers (including hazardous chemicals/liquids, items on dry ice), delivering them to end users and receiving them in the e-procurement system.
  • To write and review Risk assessments and SOP’s and adhere to any relevant ones for safe working practices.
  • To undertake other duties carried out by the technical team such as unpacking and delivery of goods, dishwashing service, running autoclaves, and helping where necessary within the team to ensure a complete technical service for the department.
  • Support the technical team in different activities including biological and chemical waste disposal, laundry collection, running the in-house stores and stocks checks and maintenance of other laboratory equipment.

The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.
Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria

  • Minimum level 3 qualification (e.g. A levels, AS levels, International Baccalaureate diploma or other level 3 qualification) plus work experience in a relevant technical/scientific post.
  • Background in Chemistry/Biochemistry or related subjects.
  • Previous experience in Chemistry or Biochemistry laboratories.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills, managing competing priorities and able to recognize and resolve problems.
  • Computer literate in MS Word, Excel and email software.
  • Excellent teamwork skills and communication.
  • Ability to learn new techniques and skills to the work context.
  • Ability to interact positively with staff at every level.

Desirable criteria

  • Experience working in a research laboratory.
  • Experience with analytical equipment including UV and FTIR spectrophotometers, chromatographers, or atomic absorption spectrometer.
  • Experience handling liquid N2 and gas cylinders.
