Job summary

Applicants are invited for a research position in the Department of Aeronautics to join the Marie Skłodowska-Curie European Training Network; titled Advanced Research Training for the Biotribology of Natural and Artificial Joints in the 21st Century.

The understanding of the tribological performance of artificial joints in the human body is key to increasing their performance and durability. Understanding the role of wear particle generation in artificial joints, along with the role of corrosion in accelerating this wear will form the basis of the project. The project will be mainly computational in nature, but will involve collaborating with colleagues at Imperial and elsewhere to obtain and use experimental results.

The post is funded through an EU Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network in the area of biotribology. The network focuses on this through a collaborative network of partners is the UK, Switzerland, Sweden, German and China. Secondments and network-wide training events at some of these partners will be key features of the post, as will presentation of key results at international conferences.

Duties and responsibilities

Main duties will include:

  • Perform research tasks aimed at developing, modelling and optimising the tribocorrosion characteristics of artificial joints (such as hip and knee).
  • Write original research papers and submit them for publication in peer-reviewed international journals. Disseminate the results of the research by attending international conferences.
  • Regularly compile technical reports and presentations; attend all the project meetings and complete the required training.
  • To present findings to colleagues
  • To provide advice to other staff and students
  • To assist with the publication of findings
  • To attend relevant workshops and conferences as necessary

Essential requirements

  • A first-class undergraduate degree in Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering or a related subject (or equivalent) or an MSc postgraduate qualification in one of these subjects with a Merit or Distinction grade (or equivalent)
  • The ability to work in an internationally-oriented environment, including fluency in English
  • Demonstrable proficiency in programming
  • Sound knowledge of general computational methods
  • Ability to perform effectively under pressure and time constraints, possess good personal organisational and time management skills.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail and have effective interpersonal skills with the ability to deal with a wide variety of people.
  • Ability to conduct research in the broad area, and ability to assist in the training of other researchers and students in the techniques used for the research
  • Ability to relate to other researchers, and students in an academic context.
  • Ability to interact successfully with researchers and students to learn and teach new skills.
  • Ability to present themselves at progress meetings, conferences and seminars with authority and coherence

Funding conditions require that

  • The applicant must not have resided in the UK for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date (and not have carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in that country) – unless as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention
  • Applicants must be early-stage researchers (ESR), i.e. at the date of recruitment (ITN) and be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and have not been awarded a doctoral degree.
  • A Master’s level (or equivalent) qualification in Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering or a related subject at a Merit or Distinction grade (or equivalent).

Desirable requirements

  • Demonstrable proficiency in programming in matlab or python
  • Understanding of key aspects of tribologicalor lubrication analysis

Further information

The maximum salary range = £38,815 (MC ITN with family allowance)

The minimum salary range = £35,471 (MC ITN without family allowance).
