Job summary

Pre-sessional EAP Teachers deliver the CfAE summer pre-sessional course to prospective Imperial College students going on to undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. The pre-sessional is uniquely STEMM-focused and is delivered remotely using an online flipped approach. The platform used is Microsoft Teams integrated with OneNote Class Notebooks, Stream and Forms.

Teachers will teach synchronous classes on general academic literacy as well as discipline-specific language and discourse and engage students in several STEMM-related activities which explore current Imperial College research and involve Imperial College researchers. Teachers must be UK-based for the duration of the contract. It is expected that regular meetings and CPD will take place in person on campus.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Deliver daily synchronous classes to undergraduate and postgraduate pre-sessional students
  • Teach general academic literacy classes and lead discipline-specific language and discourse workshops that meet the needs of STEMM students
  • Deliver course content through Microsoft 365 applications, specifically Teams and OneNote class notebooks, also using Forms and Stream
  • Manage two class teams and integrated OneNote Class Notebooks via the Microsoft Teams app
  • Evaluate students’ formative oral and written work and monitor progress
  • Provide clear, detailed, timely and effective feedback
  • Mark summative tests and assessment tasks
  • Participate in regular standardisation meetings
  • Guide students’ personal study
  • Participate in course induction, staff meetings and end of course debrief, and attend occasional social events that form part of the course
  • Perform administrative duties required by the course such as completing work records and attendance registers in a timely manner
  • Participate in ongoing training and CPD throughout the course
  • Liaise regularly and collaborate with colleagues, and report any areas of concern to the CfAE Director or Pre-sessional Course Director
  • Be available during the working day (when not teaching) for the full duration of the course.

Essential requirements


  • Applicants should have a first degree, and DELTA (or equivalent) and/or postgraduate degree in Applied Linguistics/TESOL/EAP or other relevant area. We will also consider applicants with a Master’s in a relevant STEMM subject with a minimum CELTA teaching qualification (or equivalent) and some EAP experience.


  • Applicants must be competent and confident in their use of ICT and have experience teaching with Microsoft 365 apps (Teams, OneNote, Class Notebooks, Forms and Stream) as well as core Microsoft 365 applications (Excel and PowerPoint).
  • Proven classroom teaching skills with experience of teaching an existing course syllabus, and assessing ELT and/or EAP students at a range of levels in higher education contexts or similar in the UK or abroad.
  • Experience of supporting independent learning in and outside the classroom.
  • Experience of online EAP teaching.
  • Experience of Pre-sessional teaching or ESAP (STEMM)


  • Knowledge of key theories and good practice in ELT.
  • Knowledge of EAP language learning, teaching, assessment, and course and materials design.
  • Knowledge of English discourse and syntax.

Skills and Abilities

  • Articulate, effective and highly competent communicator in speech and writing.
  • Competent and confident in using a range of IT/AV equipment in the classroom.
  • Competent in managing classroom interaction face-to-face and online.
  • Ability and willingness to engage with complex material from a range of STEMM disciplines.
  • Ability to engage enthusiastically with, and communicate complex information to, STEMM postgraduate students.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, and to share ideas and practice.
  • Excellent personal organisation, administrative skills, and time management.
  • Positive and professional attitude towards, and communication with, colleagues and students.
  • Awareness of, and sensitivity to, diversity in the workplace.

Further information

The course will run from Monday 12 th July to Friday 20 th August 2021 with tutor induction from Tuesday 6 th July to Friday 9 th July.
