Job description

Job summary

The main objective of the Project Manager role within the Research Project Management (RPM) Team is to lead on the project management for the RPM’s portfolio of research projects as well as to lead on the development of new opportunities.

The current portfolio is mostly funded by the European Commission and made up of projects from the Horizon2020 Programme, but it will soon include projects from the new Horizon Europe Programme . The new programme facilitates collaboration and strengthens the impact of research and innovation in developing, supporting and implementing EU policies while tackling global challenges.

It supports creating and better dispersing of excellent knowledge and technologies. You will have the opportunity to be part of this exciting new chapter in European Commission research funding and will ensure that RPM projects’ management meet the funder’s goals and requirements.

The RPM office is an integral part of Imperial’s Enterprise Department , which provides commercial and business management services to support the award and delivery of funded programmes and projects. The work of Enterprise directly underpins Imperial’s mission, thereby supporting the development of new or enhanced research, education and/or translation capabilities across all faculties of the university and on behalf of Imperial’s academic community. The RPM has a specific focus on managing high-profile international projects (and bids) funded primarily by the European Commission.

Duties and responsibilities

You will work alongside other members of the RPM team to provide efficient leadership on all project management requirements and deliverables for our portfolio of projects. The role also includes but not limited to event coordination and management, implementation of the communication activities (for the duration, closure and follow-up of the existing projects), and undertake bid-writing for new proposals and future projects.

It will be important for you to interface with key academic staff, College supporting services staff as well as external partners from various projects’ consortia. You will be the point of contact between the projects’ consortia and the funding body; with our current portfolio of projects, this is mainly the European Commission.

You will manage and monitor project budgets and finances while ensuring projects adhere to EC financial policies and rules as well as that dictated by Imperial. You will lead on with the project scientific Principal Investigator (PI) the financial and technical reporting as dictated by funding requirements and adhere to clear and consistent processing and archiving of documentation. The role will also include supporting RPM to engage and participate in Imperial-led activities and events.

Essential requirements

We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated candidate that embraces change and adapts quickly to our variety of research projects and its demands. Some of the essential requirements are:

  • Project Management qualifications and/or experience, especially with science.
  • Experience of research funding mechanisms, especially the European Commission.
  • Experience working in busy environments, with multiple stakeholders and tight deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and liaison skills.
  • Experience of working in large and complex organisations, especially in higher education.
