The Department of Computing is a leading department of Computer Science among UK Universities, and has consistently been awarded the highest research rating. In the 2014 REF assessment, The Department was ranked third (1 st in the Research Intensity table published by The Times Higher) and was rated as “Excellent” in the previous national assessment of teaching quality. Imperial was also awarded “Gold” according the last Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) 2017.
The Research Assistant / Research Associate will work under the EPSRC funded Established Career fellowship project, POST: Protocols, Observabilities and Session Types, and other EPSRC funded projects, Turtles: Protocol-Based Foundations for Distributed Multiagent Systems, Border Patrol: Improving Smart Device Security through Type-Aware Systems Design, Stardust: Session Types for Reliable Distributed Systems and AppControl: Enforcing Application Behaviour through Type-Based Constraints.
Duties and responsibilities
The projects have a particular emphasis on putting theory into practice, by embedding session types in a range of programming languages or applying them to realistic case studies.
The purpose of the role of the Research Assistant / Associate is to be responsible for one/two of the following topics;
- Verifying correctness of concurrent, parallel and distributed programming languages such as, e.g. Go, Rust, Scala, F#, F*, Java, Python, TypeScript, PureScript, Haskell, OCaml or MPI.
- Extending the programming languages based on session types.
- Investigating relationships between session types and other computational models/theories such as Game Semantics, Automata Theories, Model Checking, Logic, Dependent type theory and process calculi.
- Investigating mechanisation of session type verifications by, e.g. Coq, Isabelle and Agda.
- At Research Assistant level, a Masters degree (or equivalent) in a relevant area and must show evidence of the ability to undertake research.
- At Research Associate level, a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant area.
- Practical experience within a research environment and a proven research record and publications in the relevant areas.
- A strong background in programming languages, including type systems
- A good general knowledge of concurrency theory.
- Strong programming and software engineering skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to organise your own work with minimal supervision and prioritise work to meet deadlines.
You will be part of the Theory of Computational Systems Group based at the South Kensington Campus.
