Job description

Job summary

This position is funded by the EPSRC to work on our recently awarded “Life at the Extremes” project. We will be investigating the molecular interactions and mechanisms that life uses to adapt to extreme environments, how far these could allow life to adapt and how these approaches can be used to inspire new active materials.

The position is aimed at outstanding scientists who would like to develop new instruments, tools and approaches to study the properties, structure and interactions of biological and bio-inspired lipid membranes under extreme conditions. You will be working within a highly interdisciplinary team, drawing on and developing expertise in physical chemistry, membrane biophysics and instrument development.

Duties and responsibilities

In addition to direct research duties, you will undertake project management, take responsibility for day-to-day supervision of students working on associated projects, submit publications to refereed journals and contribute to attracting external research funding.

Essential requirements

    • Hold or be near completion of a PhD in physical chemistry or a closely related field, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience.


    • Significant practical experience in membrane biophysics


    • Practical experience within a research environment


    • Experience of dealing with students and research sponsors


    • Practical experience in a range of research techniques (see job description for details)


    • Track record in developing scientific work for publication


    • Experience in communicating work to diverse audiences


  • Willingness to work flexibly, undertake necessary training and work as part of a dynamic team

This is a full time, fixed term position until 31 January 2023. You will be based at White City Campus.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded a PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range of £36,694 – £39,888 per annum.
