Job summary

We are seeking a Research Associate for 24 months to work on our newly established Samsung-Imperial grant project “Quantum Simulation and Algorithms for New Quantum Materials”.

Duties and responsibilities

The main task of the post holders will be

  • to develop algorithms for an optimum use of the existing hardware of quantum processors
  • to work on new algorithms to demonstrate useful quantum advantages on near-term hardware
  • to develop quantum protocols to run on a cavity QED architecture

The duties will include identifying concrete problems, developing new algorithms and implementation schemes for quantum simulations. The post holders will have direct access to the IBM Q quantum computer. In this interdisciplinary project, the post holders will work as part of a dedicated team of two Research Associates and four PhD students led by Professor Myungshik Kim, Professor Peter Haynes and Professor Johannes Knolle.

This project will involve a high degree of teamwork and interdisciplinary research and to help produce independent and original research within the Quantum Optics and Laser Science Group, submit publications to refereed journals, and help with teaching and administration within the Group.

Essential requirements

It is essential to the project that you have the following:

• Hold a PhD, (or equivalent) inone of the following areas:

  • Quantum Information and Quantum Algorithms
  • Quantum simulation protocols on transmons
  • Simulation of Quantum Materials
  • Electronic Structure Calculations;

• Proven research experience with programming and numerical methods for quantum many-body systems, quantum chemistry, quantum optics and/or quantum information

• Evidence of outstanding promise and originality in research

• Ability to work independently and collaboratively

• Ability to draft papers

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £36,694 – £39,888 per annum
