Applications are invited for a fully funded 30-month position as Research Associate within the Fluid Mechanics Section in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London. The position is funded by the EPSRC ExCALIBUR project “Turbulence at the Exascale: Application to Wind Energy, Green Aviation, Air Quality and Net-zero Combustion”. The project is a collaboration led by Imperial College London together with the universities of Warwick, Cambridge, Newcastle, Southampton, and the Daresbury Laboratory.
The project advertised here is to prepare uDALES, which is an open-source code that simulates urban flow and microclimate at metre-scale resolutions, for exascale simulation. This will be achieved by making use of the 2DECOMP&FFT library, which will be upgraded to take advantage of hybrid architectures (CPU+GPU) in this project. Exascale computation will require reimplementation of the urban surface calculations (e.g. short- and long-wave computations) in uDALES.
Duties and responsibilities
- To lead the implementation of the 2DECOMP&FFT library into the uDALES code.
- To reimplement the urban surface calculations (radiation, flow) in a GPU-friendly manner by taking advantage of the latest parallel paradigms. This requires close collaboration with colleagues in Aeronautics that will be developing a GPU-friendly version of 2DECOMP&FFT.
- Contribute to adding new capabilities to the uDALES (uncertainty quantification, information from mesoscale atmospheric models)
- Demonstrate the capabilities of the new uDALES for emergency response calculations (accidental releases).
- Hold a PhD (or equivalent) in high performance computing or in computational Fluid dynamics, or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience.
- Practical experience in high performance computing
- Practical experience in software development
- Knowledge of at least two programming languages and parallel paradigms (Fortran,C,C++, MPI, OpenMP, OpenACC, etc.)
- Ability to conduct a community-based software development project
- Willingness to work as part of a team and to be open-minded and cooperative
