Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of Post-Doctoral Research Associate based in the Department of Earth Science and Engineering.

You will work in a very challenging research field, exploiting advanced sub-pixel technology for image-matching and 3D terrain data generation, to develop an integrated system for autonomous high-resolution 3D vision-based UAV navigation, incorporating in-flight oblique/perspective view matching and geometric correction. The research will involve algorithm and software development in addition to rigorous imaging experiments, and in-flight testing of the integrated software-UAV system.

Duties and responsibilities

You must have a strong background in mathematics, photogrammetry and/or computing, with computer programming skills and experience (e.g. MatLab, C++ and other languages). You should also have good working knowledge of image processing and remote sensing. You will have considerable scope to customise and implement the required work packages including interim and final reports. You should be an effective communicator as the role will include liaison with our industrial partner in UAV development and testing, as well as with other researcher working in related fields.

This Phase 2 project runs for 12 months with a tight schedule which is focused on the delivery of an integrated software-hardware technological solution to a real-world application.

Essential requirements

At Research Associate Level: A PhD (or equivalent) in image processing, photogrammetry, remote sensing or geomatics

At Research Assistant Level: First degree (or equivalent) in physics, geophysics, mathematics, computing, or electronic engineering

In addition, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Computer programming skills and experience (e.g. MatLab, C++ and other languages)
  • Research experience and achievement in image analysis or related fields, as evidenced by published output including PhD thesis
  • Strong background in mathematics, photogrammetry and computing

This is a 12 month Fixed Term Contract

This post will be based at the South Kensington Campus, and is expected to start no later than 1 st April 2021 although, under the current COVID-19 restrictions which are likely to be in place for some time to come, it will be likely that the post holder will start the position remotely.

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant salary range £36,045 – £39,183 per annum.
