The Centre for Health Economics & Policy Innovation (CHEPI) was established in 2017 and is currently one of the largest and most active research centres at Imperial College Business School . CHEPI’s mission is to research incentives and environments that encourage individuals and organisations to make health-enhancing decisions. CHEPI is currently participating in over 15 large scale funded research projects involving faculty across Imperial College London and other leading academic institutions.

To complement our existing faculty, researcher and student base, CHEPI is seeking to appoint a Research Associate to support the work of the centre, and in particular our European Commission-funded Horizon 2020 project STOP (Science & Technology in childhood Obesity Policy) . Involving 31 research, advocacy and governmental organisations from 16 countries, STOP began in 2018 and will impact health policies targeting childhood obesity across Europe.

A key component of the STOP project involves the assessment of the long-term health and economic impacts of a range of policy options for addressing childhood obesity in Europe. The appointee will play a leading role in the design and development of such analyses, leveraging tools that are being developed as part of the project. In particular, Imperial College is leading the development of a policy simulation model designed to evaluate the long-term impacts of childhood obesity interventions. Through combining data from multiple sources, including empirical studies, and utilising cutting edge machine learning techniques, the model is able to describe entire countries, capturing births, deaths and crucially the changing health of the population over time. Interventions designed in other areas of STOP are then implemented in the model and their impacts evaluated.

The appointee will also support the wider development of the simulation tool, including designing the long-term strategy for the model and identifying further areas where it can generate impact. In addition, this role will involve collaborating closely and identifying synergies to exploit in the outputs of STOP’s European partner projects: the Policy Evaluation Network (PEN), Co-Create , and Joint Action on Implementation of Validated Best Practices in Nutrition (Best-ReMaP).

This full-time post will commence in April 2021 for an initial fixed term of 12 months. The successful candidate will be based within CHEPI at Imperial College Business School, South Kensington with day to day supervision being provided by Prof. Franco Sassi (Director of CHEPI) & Dr Jack Olney (Manager of CHEPI).

Duties and responsibilities

Support the activities of CHEPI, in particular the model development in STOP and coordinating outputs with other European partner projects; Lead the development of the longer-term strategy for the STOP model; Lead the coordination of activities and dissemination of outputs across STOP, PEN and Best-ReMaP; Draft academic manuscripts, along with interim and final project reports, on research findings for publication; Communicate findings to a variety of audiences including funders, academics, and policy makers at seminars and international conferences; Collaborate closely with members of CHEPI and project teams; Contribute towards developing the profile of CHEPI.

Essential requirements

  • PhD in a relevant discipline e.g. in health economics, behavioural science, statistics, epidemiology, (social and economic) geography, public health. Candidates with a PhD near to completion will also be considered.
  • Experience in research around health policy
  • Experience in the design, implementation and evaluation of interventions
  • Experience in constructing and maintaining large data sets
  • Experience in dissemination of academic research to a variety of audiences
  • Expertise in statistical or econometric analyses, or mathematical modelling
  • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary international team
  • Demonstrable evidence of ability to take initiative, critically appraise research and support others
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Ability to be highly organised and require minimal supervision
  • Willingness to work as part of a team and to be open-minded and cooperative
  • Flexible attitude towards work
  • Willingness to take initiative in the development of research

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £36,045 – £39,183 per annum.
