Job summary

The Centre for Languages, Culture and Communication (CLCC) is seeking a lecturer to develop and teach our 20-week undergraduate module Understanding and Researching Society . Joining an established team of teaching staff in our Humanities and Social Sciences field, the postholder will design, develop and deliver excellent teaching, with a focus on politics and research methods, for undergraduate students from scientific, technical and medical backgrounds.

In the academic year 2012-13, the College successfully introduced the Imperial Horizons programme for undergraduate students which, in 2020, became embedded within the curriculum as part of students’ degree programmes. The programme, based in the CLCC, aims to put science in the context of the wider world and to develop interdisciplinary approaches to learning and thinking. This programme includes a range of modules in the fields of Languages, the Humanities and Social Sciences.

Duties and responsibilities

In this post, you will be responsible for:

  • Devising, delivering and facilitating exemplary teaching, assessment and feedback, face-to-face and using Blackboard Learn as well as other online tools.
  • Monitoring student attendance, keeping online records up-to-date and liaising with administration on student attendance issues.
  • Supporting and advising students when required and, when necessary, liaison with departmental tutors regarding any student in difficulty.
  • Designing and developing new modules and continuous review of existing modules and processes in order to ensure that provision remains relevant, is informed by research, and meets the objectives of the College Teaching and Learning Strategy.
  • Setting coursework assessments and providing constructive feedback on assignments within two weeks of the submission deadline. Liaison with second markers and external examiners. Inputting marks into online marksheets.
  • Regular communication with management, administrative staff, IT support, room support and other lecturers and attendance at relevant meetings.
  • Providing website updates, and updated reading lists to the library Leganto system.

Essential requirements

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • A Masters level qualification in a discipline relevant to the content for the module Understanding and Researching Society
  • Proven excellence in teaching skills and promoting effective learning at university level.
  • Experience of designing and delivering assessments, and giving prompt, high-quality feedback on knowledge and communication skills
  • Experience of curriculum design
  • Experience of using a VLE to support teaching and assessment
  • Subject-specific expertise in disciplines relevant to the module Understanding and Researching Society.
  • Wide-ranging knowledge of potential resources for enhancing teaching and learning
  • Excellent IT skills, Microsoft Office 365 suite, Blackboard Learn and Zoom
  • Aptitude for building collaborative and effective relationships with students and staff
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Further information

As you may be required to teach in the classroom and online, you will be expected to have a laptop or desktop computer with an internet connection capable of supporting online teaching.

This is a part time post, with variable hours to be agreed annually. This module is taught on Thursday from 4:00-6:00pm (20 classes of two hours, starting 14 October 2021). There is the possibility of more work on the evening class programme, but this varies from year to year and is only available subject to lecturer availability and student demand.
