Job summary

Are you passionate about working towards helping others in what can often be challenging circumstances? This is a fixed term post as a Student Mental Health Adviser. You will play an integral role within the Student Counselling and Mental Health Advice Service providing and developing Mental Health and Wellbeing advice across the College. Specialist support to students with moderate to severe and/or enduring mental health difficulties will form a large part of this role. There will also be the opportunity to liaise between mental health services in the community and College support services. Reporting to the Deputy Head of Service, you will promote good practice, contribute to psycho-educational workshops and training on matters related to mental health and will initiate and design events promoting the Service and student wellbeing across the College.

Duties and responsibilities

    • You will manage a caseload of students with moderate to severe and/or enduring mental health difficulties to support them effectively during their time at College and in completing their studies.


    • Respond to complex situations/incidents at the request of the Deputy Head of Service and/or senior College staff through consultation and attendance where appropriate.


    • Support students in crisis and contribute to coordinating responses across campuses.


  • Provide advice, support and consultancy to College staff, on individual and generic mental health awareness and wellbeing issues and to provide ongoing consultation and support to staff where situations are ongoing.

Essential requirements

    • You will be an experienced Mental Health Adviser preferably with experience of working in an educational, NHS or comparative organisational context.


    • You will possess relevant professional qualifications in the field of mental health, (e.g. Nursing with RMN or CPN specialities, Mental Health Social Worker, Clinical/Counselling Psychologist) registered with the HPCP, or holding full current accreditation by, or registration with, a relevant and appropriate professional body.


    • Experience of working with people with mental health conditions/autism spectrum


    • Significant professional post-qualification experience of working within a large and complex institutional context, and ability to demonstrate a clear understanding of how this context impacts on therapeutic decisions.


  • You will have the ability to work collaboratively and as part of a team to enhance student experience and satisfaction.
