The Avantha Chair was established in 2011, as part of a generous donation by the Avantha Group to advance the King’s India Institute’s goal of becoming the leading international centre for the study of contemporary India. Based in the School of Global Affairs in the Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy, the Institute’s mission is to pursue world-leading and multi-disciplinary and influential research, teaching, and public engagement on contemporary India.
King’s India Institute is now searching for a new Avantha Chair to join our thriving academic community. The successful candidate will be an exceptional researcher, with a strong publication record in a field relevant to the Institute and School’s research. Current areas of strength include democracy, the state and political institutions in India; political economy; Indian foreign policy and strategic studies; and society and economy in India.
The Chair will be involved in education, mentoring PhD students and teaching on the MSc Global Affairs programme in collaboration with the other King’s Global Institutes. The successful candidate will work with the Director, to strengthen the Institute’s research and external profile, and develop and extend collaborations internally and externally. It is desirable for the Avantha Chair to have experience of providing advice to policymakers and engaging in public discussion on issues relating to India. Proficiency in an Indian language is an advantage. There is also the possibility for the postholder to lead the Institute in due course.
King’s is committed to equality, diversity and inclusion, and through this appointment it is our aim to develop candidate pools that include applicants from all backgrounds and communities. We particularly encourage applications from women, people from black and minority ethnic communities, the LGBT+ community and from disabled people.
