Job description

The School of Security Studies at King’s College London is looking to recruit a Deputy School Research Manager to provide a pre- and post-award support service for grant applicants and holders in the School, as well as to contribute to the development and maintenance of the School’s research strategy, based around a recently implemented research theme structure.

Based at the Defence Academy in Shrivenham, and reporting to the School Research Manager, the post holder will support the development, writing and submission of research funding proposals, ensuring these are appropriately costed in-line with both funder rules and internal policies, overseeing the approvals process, and ensuring the timely and accurate submission of bids. The post-holder will also have responsibility for an active portfolio of internal and external grants, setting these up on the internal systems when they are awarded, monitoring expenditure in-line with the eligible cost criteria of different funders, and assisting in the compilation and submission of progress and final reports. Acting as secretary to the School’s Research Committee, the post holder will organise and contribute to regular committee meetings to discuss the strategic direction of the school’s research efforts, including the REF process, the development of large, strategic research bids, impact, PGR issues, and in particular the development and maintenance of the School’s eight research themes. This will also include taking a lead role in the conceptualisation and organisation of the School’s annual research conference and overseeing the recruitment process of PGR representatives for each of the School’s 8 research themes. The post holder will also be responsible for producing a monthly research newsletter, including the promotion of current, live funding opportunities, research related events and recent research successes. The post holder will also be responsible for line management of a part-time Grade 5 Research Officer providing additional support in some of the above areas.

The School of Security Studies is a large academic unit within the Social Sciences and Public Policy Faculty at King’s College London, and comprises the Defence Studies Department at the Shrivenham Campus near Swindon, and the War Studies Department at the Strand Campus in London. The School has between 150 and 200 full-time academic staff, and several of the world’s leading experts in the academic study of security and defence issues. With an annual submission rate of around 90 research funding bids, the School has an ongoing average research grant portfolio of somewhere between £10 and £15 million.

This post will be offered on an indefinite contract.
This is a full-time post – 100% full time equivalent

Key responsibilities

  • To provide a pre-award support service for grant submissions from across the School, in conjunction with staff members from the College’s Arts & Sciences Research Office, including costing grant applications in accordance with funder rules and College policies, arranging peer review of draft bids and internal approvals, and ensuring the timely submission of bids.
  • To provide a post-award support service for grant holders from across the School, including ensuring that grant expenditure is in-line with funder requirements, assisting with the production of interim and financial reports and overseeing the administration associated with the recruitment of staff to research grants.
  • To act as secretary to the School’s Research Committee, including organising regular meetings, taking minutes, contributing to discussions about the strategic direction of the School’s research efforts and assisting in the organisation of the School’s annual research conference.
  • To produce a regular, monthly research newsletter including the latest research funding calls, research-related College policy announcements and the latest grant successes from across the School.
  • To line manage a part-time Grade 5 Research Officer, and/or other posts as required by the School Research Manager

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria

  • Educated to degree level, or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent knowledge of the FEC costing methodology as it is applied both to the costing of research grants and their post-award administration.
  • Excellent knowledge of the UK and international research funding landscape, and particularly the opportunities available for social science researchers.
  • Experience of working in higher education in a research administration role, including the management of large, complex research budgets.
  • Experience of managing multiple projects simultaneously, with competing deadlines, ensuring delivery according to external and internal requirements and within budget.
  • Experience in managing funder relationships.
  • Experience of acting as a secretary to a committee, ideally in a higher education environment.
  • Experience of identifying and promoting research funding opportunities appropriate for a particular academic audience.
  • Good communication and networking skills, including excellent written language skills, negotiation and influencing skills, diplomacy and tact, and ability to build professional networks.
  • Proficient IT Skills (including Word and Excel) and a high level of numeracy.
  • Ability to provide excellent service under pressure, with a high degree of attention to detail, managing time effectively, working flexibly and prioritising workload.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Desirable criteria

  • Relevant professional qualification or membership of appropriate professional body.
  • Knowledge of the Worktribe costing software.
  • Knowledge of the Pure research management software.
  • Significant experience of line management/supervision of staff or volunteers
