Job Description

The Communications and Engagement Manager is responsible for delivering a broad communications and engagement portfolio, as part of a team working to grow, develop and support our thriving community of postgraduate research students (PGRs) across all research degree programmes at King’s College London. They will have line management responsibility of the Student Engagement Coordinator, working as a team to deliver student experience initiatives for PGRs.

A core element of King’s Research Strategy is to ‘retain, develop and recruit world-class talent’, and our PGR Strategy includes an aspiration to increase PGR numbers by about 1000 over the next ten years. The role holder will therefore play a crucial role in supporting stakeholder engagement, and liaising with students and staff to facilitate an engaged, vibrant and growing postgraduate research community.

The role holder will have oversight and management of existing communications channels as well as designing and delivering new initiatives.

This post is based in the Centre for Doctoral Studies in the Doctoral Student Environment and Development team, which has overall focus on providing researcher development opportunities and enhancing PGR student experience at King’s. This post will work collaboratively with the Doctoral Development arm of the team and develop initiatives to enhance student experience, opportunities and inclusivity.

The role holder will be a key member of the Centre for Doctoral Studies (CDS) staff but will also work closely with faculty-based communications colleagues and the Corporate Communications team, as well as developing close working relationships with key academic and professional services staff.

This post will be offered on an indefinite contract

This is a part-time post – 80% full time equivalent.

The team is currently hybrid working, combining working from home and working on campus. We are open to other flexible working requests.

Key responsibilities

  • Developing and implementing the communications strategy for CDS, including internal communications of news, events, opportunities and external marketing e.g. via the website, social media and at open events. Engaging relevant stakeholders to ensure comms is streamlined and joined-up.
  • Crafting accurate, clear web copy, news pieces, email updates and documents for a variety of audiences, including PGRs, supervisors, and other stakeholders.
  • Restructuring the CDS websites and online information, enhancing user experience and ensuring information is accessible.
  • Gathering and analysing data on engagement with CDS information and comms, advising on /responding to trends and devising strategies to maximise impact.
  • Leading on centrally organised PGR student satisfaction surveys, promotion and follow-up activity and communication.
  • Managing the CDS brand, occasionally refreshing the brand within the boundaries of King’s guidelines.
  • Proactively seeking opportunities to raise the profile of CDS and its activities internally and externally, representing the department at events and meetings, e.g. induction events, faculty PGR meetings and externally.
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues across the team to design and deliver key student experience initiatives and events, particularly to enhance community building, student inclusion and engaging with underrepresented groups.
  • Developing and maintaining close working relationships with colleagues in Marketing, Corporate Communications, Students and Education and other relevant departments across the university.
  • Enhancing our engagement and two-way communication with the PGR community, ensuring student voice feeds into the work of the CDS e.g. via focus groups, student liaison groups.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria

1. Experience of working in higher education.

2. Strong project management skills, ideally with experience in a large complex organisation with multiple stakeholders.

3. Understanding and experience of creating a communications strategy and delivery plan.

4. Clear, creative and engaging written communication skills, with ability to explain complex messages to a range of stakeholders at different levels, via a range of different comms channels.

5. Confident, articulate and engaging presenter, able to persuade and engage stakeholders from a range of disciplines and levels of seniority.

6. Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills including commitment to effective teamworking.

7. Track record of taking a proactive approach to engaging with target groups.

8. Excellent attention to detail.

9. Ability to independently manage and prioritise workload.

10. Excellent digital skills, including software packages, communications and project management platforms, website management, social media.

11. Enthusiasm and commitment to enhancing PGR student experience,

12. Commitment to principles of Equality, Diversity & Inclusion and an understanding of how these principles are applied within the context of PGR training.

Desirable criteria

13. Line management experience.

14. Understanding of the PGR training pathway (e.g. from experience as a PGR student, researcher, or in a administrative/support role).

15. Numerical and data analysis skills, able to manipulate data sets e.g. from student surveys, interpret results and present them effectively.

16. Experience and knowledge of web-usability principles and issues, understanding of best practice with a view to enhancing a user’s web experience.
