Global Health & Social Medicine is a unique interdisciplinary department at King’s College London founded in 2012. Its mission is to address the changing landscape of health and medicine from social science perspectives.
The Department invites applications for a Lecturer in Global Health & Social Medicine. We welcome applicants in any area of the social sciences with an interest in in any field within global health and/or social medicine.
You should hold a PhD in a relevant social science discipline such as sociology, demography, gerontology, social epidemiology, social policy, health policy, economics, political economy or an interdisciplinary field. Your areas of research might include but are not limited to the social, political and economic determinants of health; health systems and policies; demography of health and ageing; and life-course studies, as well as other areas that relate to one of our research groups: Ageing & Society; Mental Health & Society; Culture, Medicine & Power; and Bioscience & Society.
The Lecturer will contribute to teaching, supervision, marking and academic and pastoral support of students on our BA/BSc in Global Health & Social Medicine and our Postgraduate programmes on Ageing & Gerontology, Global Health & Social Justice, and Bioethics & Society. They will also pursue opportunities for conducting education-focused scholarship in their field and occasionally mentoring (though not supervising) PhD students. The Lecturer will themselves receive mentoring and support to develop their skills and experience in education, academic administration, and scholarship. The post will be responsible to the Head of Department of Global Health & Social Medicine.

The appointment is to the Academic Education Pathway (AEP), and is focused on the delivery of education, education-related scholarship, and leadership in education. The Lectureship is a fixed-term post intended to provide a promising early-career academic with opportunities to develop as an educator and member of an academic department.
This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract for 3 years.
This is a full-time post – 100% full time equivalent
- To take a role in the planning, organisation, and delivery of teaching and assessment activities within the BSc/BA Global Health & Social Medicine programmes, plus selected Master’s programmes.
- To undertake project supervision for selected undergraduate (Bachelors) and postgraduate (Masters) dissertations within areas of appropriate expertise.
- To develop and use innovative and effective teaching and learning techniques and resources that support the development of appropriate knowledge and skills as part of the diverse and flexible educational pathways of the various Global Health & Social Medicine programmes.
- To contribute to the ongoing development, design, and enhancement of the Global Health & Social Medicine curriculum, in a manner that supports a research-enhanced, interdisciplinary approach to student learning and the overall student experience.
- To serve as a tutor for Global Health & Social Medicine students at Levels 4, 5, 6 and 7, offering pastoral care and academic advice.
- To contribute to Departmental events and activities, including attendance at Departmental meetings, co-curricular activities and, on occasion, to support the Admissions Tutor in staffing Taster Days and Open Days.
- The above roles to be agreed with the Education Lead.
- They will undertake other reasonable academic duties at the request of the Head of Department.
- Specific skills are sought in delivering lectures, seminars and tutorials in global health, social science research methods, social medicine, global health policy and/or ageing.
- To pursue scholarship relating to their field of expertise and substantially education-focused, either individually or collaboratively with academic staff in the Department or elsewhere.
- To develop new knowledge and understanding within the field of their specialism and to transfer this knowledge into high quality teaching and learning for students.
- To pursue scholarship opportunities, the Fellow should make particular use of the period between May and September, when teaching duties will be lighter.
- The Lecturer will be supported by a mentor in their academic subject with whom they will meet informally to discuss progress and offer feedback and guidance in developing their skills, experience and programme of work.
- The Lecturer will be required to participate in the annual Performance Development Review (PDR) cycle.
- The Lecturer will be able to draw on the professional development opportunities offered to Early Career staff at King’s by the Faculty of Social Sciences and Public Policy, the King’s Learning Institute, the King’s Centre for Research Staff Development, the King’s Engaged Researcher Network, and the Careers Service. In particular, the Lecturer will be encouraged to complete the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP) during the first two years of the Lectureship.
- The Lecturer will have access to a Personal Research Support Allowance from the Department (currently £1,000 p.a.) and will be eligible to apply for further Faculty funding and support for scholarship and educational initiatives.
The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.
Skills, knowledge, and experience
- PhD in a relevant social science discipline (sociology, social policy, demography, gerontology, social epidemiology, health policy, economics, political economy) or a relevant interdisciplinary field
