The Dickson Poon School of Law is seeking to appoint to a Lectureship an outstanding candidate with teaching expertise and research interests in Intellectual Property and Information Law. This is a post on the Academic Education Pathway, which emphasises teaching, scholarship and innovation.
The successful candidate will wish to gain further experience in a research-led teaching role contributing to the delivery of our popular Intellectual Property and Information Law modules at undergraduate and LLM level.
The successful candidate will have the ability to teach Patent and Trade Secrets Law. It is desirable that the candidate have experience outside the legal academy, for instance in a law firm or in the creative industries, as our teaching includes practical and industry-focused aspects. An ability to contribute more widely to the core undergraduate curriculum is desirable. The successful candidate will be encouraged to undertake public engagement activities in Intellectual Property and Information Law.
The successful candidate will be actively involved in the administration and academic life of a world leading law school, and will carry out administrative duties in the Dickson Poon School of Law.
The successful candidate will be responsible to the Executive Dean.
The Dickson Poon School of Law at King’s College London is one of the oldest law schools in England and recognised globally as one of the best law schools in the world. The Dickson Poon School of Law is housed in the East Wing of Somerset House, a Grade One listed building, on the College’s Strand Campus, no more than a few minutes’ walk from the Royal Courts of Justice and Inns of Court. We are located midway between Westminster and the City of London, enabling us to have excellent contacts with practitioners and policy-makers. There is a strong tradition of engagement with the legal profession.
The School has a long-standing reputation for excellence in the laws of England and Wales, European, International and Transnational Law. Our research interests cover all areas of public and private law. These include the philosophy and sociology of law as well as doctrinal, empirical, historical, interdisciplinary and comparative approaches to the study of law. Our educational offering covers a broad range of legal disciplines. We are home to a vibrant postgraduate research community. We also have a Professional Law Institute and a Legal Clinic.
Of particular relevance to this role are the School’s on campus LLB and LLM programmes. The former includes both a survey and an advanced Intellectual Property module, and the latter includes a specialist Intellectual Property and Information Law pathway. The School also offers a distance learning Diploma/ MA programme in UK, EU & US Copyright Law.
This post will be offered on an indefinite contract.
This is a full-time post.
• Make a strong contribution to the development and delivery of our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including giving lectures, and delivering seminars and tutorials, on campus or online as appropriate. The successful applicant’s main duties will involve teaching modules on our LLB and LLM programmes;
• Take part in the development of new teaching initiatives, and programme development, in accordance with the School and University’s strategic goals;
• Contribute to the holistic development of our students through pastoral care and engagement in student experience activities, and in particular by acting as a personal tutor;
• Participate in student development processes, including student progress monitoring, education assessment and examination;
• To be available during assessment and marking periods;
• To be responsible for marking formative and summative work and to provide timely and effective feedback working closely with relevant module leaders and programme directors and the professional services programme and assessments team;
• Accept academic administrative responsibilities in School or University governance structures;
• Engage in professional development and scholarship as appropriate to further the post-holder’s career;
• To hold office hours for student support;
• To attend School meetings, including Staff meetings and Education meetings as required.

Skills, knowledge, and experience
• First degree in law
• Postgraduate or professional qualification in law
• Excellent teaching skills
• Excellent knowledge in, and experience of teaching, intellectual property and information law, in particular Patent and Trade Secrets Law
• Competence with electronic learning platforms and other IT skills
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Ability to prepare teaching materials
• Skills in providing student feedback and assessing work
• Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships
• Ability to work to and meet deadlines
• Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team
• Willingness to contribute to the School’s culture of collaboration#
• PhD, DPhil, JSD, or equivalent experience in law
• Ability to contribute more widely to the teaching of the core undergraduate law curriculum
• Research active in intellectual property and information law and experience outside the legal academy, for instance in a law firm or in the creative industries
• Demonstration of experience in the development of creative teaching methods and leadership in developing module content
• Experience of educating students with diverse cultural backgrounds
The selection process will include a panel interview and a teaching presentation as part of the interview. Interviews will be held in April 2021.
