The African Leadership Centre, King’s College London, is a dynamic Unit based within the King’s School of Global Affairs that delivers postgraduate teaching, doctoral training and academic as well as policy-oriented research. The ALC focuses on the intellectual study of leadership within the fields of development, peacebuilding and security with attention to global South contexts. The Centre is committed to building a community of thought, policy and practice leaders and spaces for critical intellectual dialogues, debates and knowledge creation on its themes of focus.
The ALC seeks to appoint a Lecturer in Leadership, Development, Peace and Security. The applicant will be an outstanding early career scholar with interdisciplinary expertise on the noted themes with empirical reflection on global South contexts. The postholder will contribute to research-led teaching, use of innovative approaches to enhance teaching, learning and student experience, supervision and marking to online and in-person student cohorts. The postholder will provide academic and pastoral support to postgraduate students at the ALC. The postholder will have opportunities to develop high-quality education-focused research. The Lecturer will themselves receive mentoring and support to further develop their skills and experience in education, academic administration and scholarship.
The appointment is to the Academic Education Pathway (AEP), which is focused on the delivery of education, education-related scholarship, and leadership in education. Indicatively 80% of a staff member’s activities will be accounted for by a combination of teaching, supervision, student support, educational leadership and innovation, and administration; the remaining 20% will be dedicated to scholarship. Staff on the AEP are not contractually obliged to carry out research and will not have significant responsibility for research. Should the balance of the member of staff’s role change (for instance, if they are successful in obtaining grant funding) the workload balance and contract type would be reviewed.
The lecturer will join an interdisciplinary team currently working on a wide range of areas including leadership studies, international political economy, development economics, peace and security, regionalism studies, youth studies, memory studies, big data and international relations.

This post will be offered on an a fixed-term contract for 2 years.
This is a full-time post.
• To plan, teach and organise delivery of teaching activities across modules at the ALC both on campus and online.
• To qualitatively enhance teaching activities and student experience by developing innovative and effective techniques and resources as part of the diverse and flexible educational pathways of the various modules at the ALC.
• To use innovative approaches (in-person and online), including research-led teaching, to prioritise critical engagement and reflection in relation to Leadership, Peace, Security and Development issues.
• To develop and use new, forward-looking assessment approaches, including those that gauge students’ theoretical and empirical comprehension, employability skills and capacity to grasp change and change-making processes.
• To serve as a personal tutor offering pastoral care and academic advice and to work closely with professional services to support students in areas of career support, outreach, disability, etc.
• To contribute to the ongoing development, design, and enhancement of the ALC’s curriculum, in a manner that supports a research-led, interdisciplinary approach to student learning and the overall student experience.
• To participate fully in assessment and examination processes as appropriate using a variety of methods and techniques and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support their learning.
• To carry out high quality scholarship (research and publication) that is impactful on themes at the nexus of Leadership, Development, Peace and Security and related subjects globally and in global South contexts (especially Africa) in particular.
• To supervise/co-supervise post-graduate students (at MSc and PhD levels) working on themes related to Leadership, Development, Peace and Security and related subjects broadly and in relation to the global South.
• To contribute to collaboration with ALC’s partner institutions (overseas HEIs) and education bodies in designing and managing joint degrees, exchanges, curriculum development and adaptation, seeking research funding opportunities etc. related to Leadership, Development, Peace and Security.
• To contribute to the education practice and development of others at the ALC, including Research Fellows/Associates, Alumni, Visiting Scholars, and Leading Practitioners through peer engagement and mentoring, exchanges, and other joint activities.
• To have and leverage membership/fellowship of professional bodies (including Higher Education Academy) and associations, and participation in external reviews to enhance teaching and research initiatives at the ALC.
• To accept academic responsibility within the ALC, involving departmental administrative responsibilities where appropriate.
• To undertake any other reasonable duties that may be requested by the Centre Director.

Skills, knowledge and experience
1. PhD in Social Sciences and/or Leadership Studies.
2. Demonstrable interdisciplinary expertise in social science subjects (including development, peace and security) and leadership studies, with focus on global South contexts, including Africa.
3. Ability (with evidence) to teach at the intersection of subject areas such as Development, Gender, Peace and Security with reference to Leadership.
4. Interest and/or evidence of teaching from critical approaches and perspectives that centre epistemic communities from the global South, with some focus on Africa.
5. Developing and disseminating innovative teaching methods, module development as well as review and research-enhanced teaching.
6. An interdisciplinary mindset and aptitude for working within an interdisciplinary framework, including teaching across disciplines and beyond the immediate field of expertise and working with other departments, HEIs and other partner institutions.
7. Experience of familiarity with assessment procedures in Higher Education, providing excellent feedback and using module feedback for module/programme enhancement.
8. Relevant experience in research supervision at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.
9. Relevant experience in academic and research administration.
10. Evidence, including through publications, of research productivity at high global standards in their chosen field.
11. Demonstrable ability to design and deliver teaching and support student centred learning at postgraduate levels both on-campus and online.
12. Excellent presentation, communications and interpersonal skills.
13. Commitment to student learning, supporting student welfare, and enhancing the student experience.
