Job description

The Department of Global Health & Social Medicine (GHSM) is a unique interdisciplinary community of students, teachers, and researchers. Together we explore the complex social determinates of health, illness, and ageing. By connecting social scientists, biomedical researchers, and clinicians, we deliver research-led teaching that investigates the ways in which advances in biomedicine and biotechnology are changing expectations on life and health, as well as the nature of medical practice.

We are now seeking an outstanding academic to join our community as Professor of Social Science and Health and hold a joint appointment between the Department of Global Health & Social Medicine and the Economic Social Research Council (ESRC) Centre for Society and Mental Health. It is expected that the post-holder will provide leadership for a workstream on Work and Welfare Reform, as well as join the Centre’s management group. The Centre is the UK’s first major UKRI-funded Centre for Society and Mental Health, established in 2020 following £8m of funding awarded, with the vision to develop research to promote and sustain good mental health in communities.

Candidates will be expected to demonstrate an established research profile in a field such as sociology, demography, social epidemiology, social policy, health policy, economics, political economy, or a related discipline, preferably applying quantitative research methods. The postholder will have the opportunity to make major contributions to teaching on both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes, providing academic leadership in teaching and student supervision at all levels, as well as promote research excellence.

For information on how to apply please go to the King’s College London Careers pages and submit the specified documentation. For an informal conversation please contact kings-search@kcl.ac.uk

The closing date for applications is 23.59 on Wednesday 12th January 2022. The selection process will include a research seminar and panel interview in February.

The Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy is committed to ensuring an inclusive interview process and will reimburse up to £250 towards any additional care costs (for a dependent child or adult) incurred as a result of attending an interview for this position.
