King’s College London Chemistry is seeking a creative researcher with a forward-looking research programme using inventive computational chemistry approaches.
Current research in the department fuses chemistry, physics and biology with a distinctive focus on the chemistry of life. We believe this new biological focus for chemistry will drive the engineering of molecules, materials, and measurement tools to help understand health and treat disease.
We encourage applications from researchers who are devising new directions that cross discipline boundaries and enhance the existing strengths of the department at the life science interface. Equally we welcome applications from computational chemists that will enrich our interactions across the Faculty of Natural, Mathematical and Engineering Sciences at King’s, where there is also considerable investment and expansion.

This post will be offered on a full-time, indefinite contract.
A key responsibility will be to provide academic leadership in chemistry and interdisciplinary research, fostering talents of staff and students to sustain a supportive, diverse and collegiate departmental culture and help us benefit from a wide range of talent and backgrounds. This will involve mentoring and inspiring early career staff and nurturing skills and ambitions of their research group.
The role holder will assist with and lead aspects of the development and implementation of department strategy.
The successful applicant will be able to cultivate a new internationally prominent research area within the department, working with other colleagues at King’s and beyond (e.g. at our partner organisation the Francis Crick Institute, other institutions and in industry) exploiting chemistry imaginatively to address societal challenges and leading exciting, collaborative research programmes. An aim is to increase the international presence of the department, link into national funding strategies and secure large-scale funding by leading strategic multi-site grant applications.
A central aspect of the role will be to guide a revamp of our chemistry curriculum to ensure computational chemistry is embedded across the whole course, highlighting the latest developments. The appointee will teach at undergraduate level and help to establish a new, modern master’s degree course focused largely on computational chemistry.
All academic staff are expected to have/obtain a professional qualification for university teaching, be responsible for health and safety in own area and undertake any other reasonable duties that may be requested by the Head of Department.

Skills, knowledge and experience
- First Degree and/or Masters in relevant subject
- PhD level in Chemistry or related subject
- In-depth understanding of their research to enable the development of new knowledge, innovation and understanding within the field
- Sponsor the development of a collegiate department with a dynamic, inspirational research and education culture together with an inclusive environment that is able to make the most of diverse talents and ideas
- Proactive in educating and supporting PhD students and postdoctoral research staff, and mentoring early career staff to ensure their effective development
- Experience in obtaining funding and leading a research group
- Capacity for actively encouraging the development and contribution of diverse perspectives and approaches, enhancing research creativity and student experience
- Effective communication skills, to engage audiences, convey conceptual and complex ideas and information, and articulate a research vision
- Ability to work co-operatively as part of a team to deliver and develop a modern chemistry curriculum and teach at all levels as well as with an interdisciplinary perspective
- Adept at leading and developing talents of others to work across discipline boundaries and work together on fruitful multi-PI grants and research projects
- Ability to plan and prioritise workloads, supporting others in workload balance
