The Department of Digital Humanities is seeking to appoint a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer to contribute to our teaching and research in the area of digital culture and society. The post-holder will have a sound knowledge of the theories and practices in a particular area of expertise within this domain, and will be expected to develop it. As a non-exhaustive list of examples, we are interested in candidates with skills in digital platforms, the development of digital products, the economics of digital culture and society, platform analytics, and data policy and ethics. We particularly welcome candidates who conduct research in areas such as this with computational and/or quantitative approaches, such as digital methods, network analysis, or programming.
We are looking for a range of expertise to support our fast-expanding Masters programmes in digital culture and society, and digital asset and media management, as well as our BA in Digital Culture. Candidates will be expected to provide high quality teaching and research across all levels, including undergraduate, masters, and PhD, to supervise undergraduate and graduate student dissertations, and to engage in excellent research, including the potential for grant capture.
The post holder will be expected to have an active research profile, a publication record appropriate to their field and career stage, and show the ability to make an excellent contribution to the REF. They will complement existing teaching and research in the Department and offer students new opportunities in their studies of digital culture and society. She/he will support student specialisation in their own area, and develop course offerings of their own. A focus on linking practice with recent theoretical approaches both in teaching and research will be particularly appreciated. The successful applicant will also be expected, within reason, to teach outside their own immediate area of expertise.
Successful candidates will also undertake pastoral and administrative duties, including personal tutoring and contribution to Departmental, Faculty and University administration.

- Undertake a balanced portfolio of classroom teaching, supervision, assessment and personal tutoring duties at UG and/or PGT levels, and design and deliver general and specialized optional modules for UG and/or PGT programmes
- Provide a distinctive, stimulating and intellectually challenging environment for student learning through the enhancement of education with research
- Teach, when required, subjects within your discipline but which are not necessarily central to your personal research or research plans
- Demonstrate continued commitment to revising the curriculum by regularly updating and innovating module content
- Show commitment to effective pedagogic practice by responding constructively to evaluation and feedback received from students, colleagues or external examiners
- Undertake an equitable load of UG and/or PGT dissertation supervisions and personal tutoring activities
- Assess student work fairly, promptly and constructively
- Participate in curriculum development initiatives, including those led by the Faculty and by King’s Academy at a College level
- Develop an inclusive and welcoming approach to teaching
- Hold the Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA)
- Contribute as needed to the Department’s administration and leadership
Research, Service and Impact:
- Develop a national and/or international research profile in the field of Digital Culture and Society through high quality publications and active engagement with relevant research communities
- Publish high-quality research outputs that will contribute to the department’s REF submission
- Engage in public engagement, knowledge transfer, service and/or impact activities
- Actively pursue applications for external funding to support individual and/or collaborative research projects, as appropriate to the discipline and area of research
- Fully participate in and contribute to the research culture of the department
- Engage, where appropriate, in interdisciplinary research activities
- Contribute to the supervision of PGR students in the department, whether as primary, joint or second supervisor
- Contribute to the wider research community, for example through regular presentations at research conferences and symposia, membership of national or international professional associations, and reviewing or refereeing for journals and publishers
- Further the College’s service agenda through significant engagements in work benefitting society
The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.
Skills, knowledge, and experience
- PhD in a relevant discipline or equivalent qualification or work experience in a relevant sector
- An in-depth understanding of the field of digital culture and society, including at least one specialism
- An excellent understanding of current research and teaching in digital culture and society
- Ability to communicate clearly and convincingly both orally and in writing to a wide range of individuals and groups, including overseas students, academic and professional services colleagues, and our cultural and industry partners
- A good knowledge of contemporary teaching and learning approaches in higher education and the ability to enthuse students with innovative teaching methods
- Experience of the development of learning materials and pedagogic innovation in teaching
- Experience of teaching and student supervision at all levels and for a multi-cultural audience
- Experience of effective assessment, marking, and provision of feedback for students
- Good interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective working relationships
- Excellent organisation skills and ability to work on own initiative
- Teaching qualification in higher education
