The Role

Reporting to the Head of Faculty Finance you will be a key member of the finance team in the Faculty of Medical Sciences, responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operational activities of the finance team supporting the management accounting and research finance functions. You will lead the co-ordination and consolidation of financial budgets, forecasts and plans for the Faculty.

You will support the Head of Faculty Finance in providing expert guidance and recommendations to the Faculty senior management team to ensure the Faculty’s strategic objectives are met.

Working with and leading finance team colleagues, you will ensure the delivery of an excellent management accounting service to the Faculty, Schools and Institutes.

Key Accountabilities

•To lead and direct the faculty finance team, developing individuals through coaching and performance development reviews.
•To oversee management of the research finance teams delivering support and advice to academic colleagues for pre-award applications and post-award reporting and forecasting.
•To oversee the consolidation of the Faculty’s financial planning, budgeting, forecasting and reporting, ensuring consistency and best practice is adopted by the Faculty Business Partners.
•To work closely with the Head of Faculty Finance in the development of high quality, insightful management information and financial analysis, delivering to tight deadlines.
•Through the Finance Business Partners, ensure Heads of Academic Unit develop a clear understanding of the drivers of financial performance and0 are fully informed of the financial implications of initiatives and decisions.
•To provide oversight to the Finance Business Partners in the development of business cases for consideration by the Head of Faculty Finance.
•To ensure that Faculty finance operations, including research finance, run efficiently and effectively in compliance with University finance and Funder regulations and with up to date, accurate, technically-correct accounting.
•As a senior member of the Finance and Planning service, play a key role in the delivery of the wider strategic goals for the office and University.
•When appropriate, make recommendations and lead upon Faculty-based strategic finance projects.
•Deputise for the Head of Faculty Finance when required.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

•Excellent organisational, staff management and leadership skills with the ability to successfully recruit, manage, develop and motivate a team.
•Experience in a management role in a large or complex organisation.
•Experience of management accounting, reporting and budget consolidation.
•Excellent financial analysis and interpretive skills with the ability to grasp the detail whilst retaining “big picture”.
•Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage and influence senior colleagues and external contacts, including the Head of Faculty Finance and Faculty Management
•Ability and experience to deploy strategic thinking to identify issues and opportunities to improve the performance of the finance operation to the benefit of the faculty
•Financial systems reporting and business warehousing skills are essential (SAP desirable) with the ability to maximise the use of IT- based financial and related systems

•Qualified CCAB accountant with proven recognised relevant experience.
•Up to date continuous professional development eg knowledge of current key management accounting techniques and business developments.
