The School of Computing is seeking to appoint three exceptional individuals with a keen interest and expertise in applied machine learning (including but not limited to deep learning) to join the Northern Cloud Cybercrime Centre (NCCC) at Newcastle University. NCCC seeks to understand the different types of criminal behaviour that can be both facilitated by and conducted within the Cloud and then build systems that will allow the detection of such crimes and the collection of digital evidence that can aid in the prosecution of Cloud-based criminals.
The current research efforts in the machine learning strand of NCCC has focused on integrating network/cloud-related time series data of very diverse and heterogeneous nature, developing innovative strategies for estimating the ‘state’ of a cloud system and natural language processing. Now we are looking for two researchers that extend this work to cybercrime prediction with a specific emphasis in (Strand a) interpretable machine learning strategies – as assisting in the process of developing evidence for prosecutions is a crucial aspect of this work and (Strand b) Natural Language Processing – to aid in the detection of individuals moving towards a position where they would be willing to engage in cybercrime.
All positions are available on a full time, fixed term basis. Interviews will be held on 16 December 2021

• Leading machine learning research activities within the Northern Cloud Crime Centre
• Playing a leading role in dissemination of machine learning and cloud-security research and impact activities for the Northern Cloud Crime Centre, including publications to first tier conferences and leading journals
• Working with local, national and international partners of the Northern Cloud Crime Centre in the development and delivery of effective methods and systems for the accurate detection of activity analogous to cloud crime
• Contributing to system development for building an effective framework for the accurate detection of activity analogous to cloud crime
• Contributing to the supervision and undertaking day-to-day management of postgraduate students at Newcastle University’s School of Computing
• Leading and contributing to new machine learning project funding applications
• Contributing to the coordination of the School of Computing, its research groups relevant to this project and the Northern Cloud Crime Centre’s research network of academic, commercial, government and third sector collaborators
• Initiating and developing research collaborations on behalf of the Centre with researchers from disciplines other than computer science. Contributing to University, School of Computing, its research groups relevant to this project and the Centre’s public engagement activities (including School and University open days)

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
• Expertise in Deep Learning Essential
• Very strong machine learning delivery skills
• Strong software development skills
• Demonstrable project management skills
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Team working and time management skills
• Strong machine learning experience and proficiency in the state of the art data science languages (e.g., python, R)
• Experience in deep learning, supervised and unsupervised learning, and time-series analysis, information visualisation
• Strong interests of cyber-security, cloud computing, and timeseries analysis Desirable 10 Familiarity with high performance computing environments (e.g., HPC clusters, GPUs, Cloud resources)
• Experience in working in highly interdisciplinary environments
• Track record of delivering systems of machine learning for real-world applications
• Significant experience of project management and team leadership
• Internationally recognised expert in machine learning and its applications (indicated through outstanding track record), with particular expertise in (a combination of) supervised and unsupervised learning, time series analysis, deep learning, natural language processing, knowledge discovery and model interpretability tasks
• Expertise in computer security
• Expertise in cloud computing
• International outstanding research and/or practice outputs in machine learning and its application
