The Role

You are invited for a post-doctoral position to work in the group of Prof Matthias Trost studying how innate immune responses triggered by bacterial infection of macrophages are regulated by ubiquitylation. Ubiquitylation is an important post-translational modification regulating all biology, including inflammation and cancer. We have recently identified key E3 ligases regulating immune functions and the project will characterise the molecular mechanisms of these E3 ligases and general ubiquitylation responses. The project will exploit the laboratory’s expertise in proteomics and cell signalling. Recent papers from our lab include articles in top journals such as EMBO Journal and Nature Microbiology.

You will be a talented and enthusiastic post-doctoral scientist with a background in mass spectrometry-based proteomics. You should have a good academic track record and have published at least one first authored paper in an international journal. You will have experience with quantitative mass spectrometry and proteomics, ideally with Orbitrap or tims-TOF instruments and will have a working experience with proteomics data analysis software and statistical analyses.

The position is available for 3 years with a possibility for further extension. Available immediately, but if you wish to start at a later time will be considered.

The position is based in the Newcastle University Biosciences Institute (NUBI). In the last Research Excellence Framework (REF2014) by the UK government, our institute (then called ICaMB) was 1st for research output amongst all of the UK submitted University biosciences departments and was placed 5th out of 44 UK submissions in the overall scores.

Develop and carry out the specified project using appropriate techniques and equipment as outlined in the personal requirements.

The Person
Knowledge, Skills and Experience


• Experience with quantitative mass spectrometry.
• Experience with proteomics analysis software such as MaxQuant, MS-Fragger, Skyline or similar.
• At least one first-author publication in a recognised peer-reviewed journal (published or submitted).


• Experience in maintaining a LC-MS system.
• Experience in programming and/or R.
• Experience with macrophages or other innate immune cells.
• Experience with cell signalling.
• Experience of presenting research work at scientific meetings.
• Ability to contribute to writing publications.

• Degree in chemistry, biochemistry or a related area.
• Possession of a PhD (or imminent submission of thesis) in chemistry, biochemistry or a related field. If you are close to submission of PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level initially.
