As Research Funding Development Manager, you will use your interest in and understanding of research to deliver a high-quality service that enables Newcastle University’s researchers to maximise their EU and international research funding. You will be a member of the University Research Funding Development Team with an EU & International specialism, working with colleagues across the University to deliver a high quality, seamless funding development service.

- Develop, maintain and use a strong working knowledge of UK (internationally oriented), EU and international research funding
- Source, review and disseminate published and unpublished information on EU and international research funding opportunities, the funding landscape and funding data, with close reference to the University’s overarching Research and Global Strategies
- Work with colleagues on the analysis and evaluation of individual Work Programmes and calls under the EU’s Framework Programme for Research and Innovation and other EU and international funds to identify areas where the University has competitive advantage. Communicate these opportunities to relevant groups/individuals and assist in consortium building where appropriate
- Discuss specific funding opportunities with individual academics and/or groups in order to help them assess the appropriateness of pursuing a particular call for proposals. Maximise success rates by advising on proposal content, providing lay review and advising on other stages of proposal selection, taking into account your knowledge of funder and peer-review requirements and expectations
- Provide project management-style support to large, complex funding proposals of particular strategic importance, in liaison with the necessary teams and committees
- Develop and maintain good practice guides and templates to assist applicants in drafting proposals. Devise and deliver in-house briefings/information days on the EU and International research funding landscape and specific schemes and skills
- Develop content for the internal Research Funding Development Team website and use social media and other methods to disseminate research funding information widely
- Attend appropriate external information and networking events e.g. UKRO annual conference and other UKRO events, and cascade information/analysis to the wider University. Help develop close links with funders and research offices in other universities in the UK, EU and internationally. Arrange funder visits and information sessions, ensuring appropriate follow-up and information sharing afterwards
- Work closely with colleagues across the Research Funding Development Team, University and Faculties to ensure a cohesive, integrated and well-regarded funding service
- Maintain a close working relationship with Deans of Research & Innovation, Deans of Postgraduate Studies, International Office, Faculty and University Research Managers, Grants & Contracts officers, Heads of Academic Units, School/Institute Administrators, and Research Coordinators
The Person (Essential)
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
• Graduate or equivalent with significant experience, or substantial broad vocational experience, in progressively more demanding jobs, in research, HE or a similar environment.
• Knowledge of EU and international research funding
• Knowledge of diverse sources of funding and specific research funding bodies’ modes of strategy and delivery
• Ability to identify and retrieve information, respond to complex queries, analyse complex concepts/documents and produce summaries tailored for both academic and non-academic audiences
• Self confident with strong interpersonal skills and able to relate to and work effectively with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds, at senior levels, both within the University and externally, including those in other countries worldwide
• Ability to converse and communicate effectively (both orally and in writing)
• Team player and supportive of others
• Presentation skills. Experience in devising and delivering information sessions and seminars
• Able to work on own initiative and manage conflicting demands on time, often to tight deadlines
• Relevant IT skills, in particular use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint
• A willingness to acquire additional skills
• Relevant significant administrative experience in a complex private or public environment
• Experience of working in an information intensive environment
• Knowledge of university research procedures and processes (desirable)
• Experience of using in house or proprietary research management systems (desirable)
