The Role

Over the last 18 months, we have reimagined the way we deliver our University IT Services, building a world-class IT department responsive to the needs of our global community. We’re growing significantly and we’ve created new opportunities and made changes to how we work. Our people have been at the centre of this change, with a particular focus on development and opportunities to learn new skills.

Academic IT is a new and exciting group within Newcastle University IT Service (NUIT). The group is responsible for looking after “non-standard” technologies which support research and teaching.

A successful candidate will have demonstrable hands-on experience working in a large complex organisation, supporting varied technologies including:

  • PC/Instrument interfacing
  • Specialised and/or bespoke software support/installation
  • Varied, specialised teaching environments
  • Windows Server
  • PowerShell

Experience working with Linux (mainly Ubuntu) and MacOS is desirable.

You will be responsible for implementing the IT roadmap to ensure systems and services are supported throughout their lifecycle, working closely with the University Cyber Security team to ensure systems and services adhere to Cyber Essentials. On occasion you will be asked to act as the subject matter expert to University projects.

Key Accountabilities

  • Provide a dedicated IT support service for the Academic community withemphasis on Level 3 support. This includes but is not limited to: –
    • Resolving incidents and problems with IT connected teaching, learningand research equipment
    • Supporting specified teaching, learning and research applications both inhouse developed and third party / packages
    • Fulfilling requests for bespoke software and hardware to support the academic community
    • Proving advice and guidance to the academic community on the best wayto use NUIT resources and assist them as needed
  • Deal with incidents, problems, changes and requests in a timely and efficientfashion, utilising their knowledge to deliver an outstanding service to theuniversity
  • Ensure that all necessary proactive and reactive processes and procedures arein place – including for example, performance monitoring and tuning; loadbalancing; major software or hardware upgrade; installation and configuration;disaster recovery planning and management; contingency planning and anyother activities required to ensure service continuity and effectiveness
  • Act as a point of escalation for issues whether they be related to support, changeor project delivery
  • Act as a senior Academic IT subject matter expert and use this knowledge todeliver excellence in operational support, project and change delivery and helpin defining the future strategy
  • Act as a coach and mentor to other members of the team, share their knowledgeand help to build up the capability of the Academic IT team overall
  • Engage with stakeholders across NUIT, and the wider as needed, to provideadvice, consultancy, support and guidance in relation to Academic IT
  • Understand the Technology Roadmap and assist in its implementation asdirected
  • Deliver any project or change related activity as part of wider NUIT or NU projectteams as required
  • Ensure that policies, standards, procedures and guidelines are followed
  • Any other reasonable duties that fall within the scope of the post, as allocated bythe line manager

The Person

  • Extensive technical background in our Academic IT technologies
  • Experience of supporting and delivering Academic IT services in a complex andgeographically diverse organisation.
  • Experience of helping to create roadmaps and deliver programmes to removetechnical debt
  • Experience of working with third party vendors and delivering an effectiveAcademic IT service using their services
  • Interest in identifying and implementing new and innovative technologies tosupport customer needs, drive up quality and improve value
  • Able to demonstrate focus on customer needs
  • A working knowledge of Cybersecurity processes and practices is essential
  • Must be willing and able to obtain any certifications required for this role includingsecurity clearances, health and safety regulations, working in hazardousenvironments etc. Must be willing and able to work in all University settingsincluding medical laboratories, human tissue laboratories, hazardous areas etc
