The Role

The Senior Innovation Associate will develop, co-ordinate and project manage a portfolio of income generating collaborations between the National Innovation Centre for Ageing (NICA) and a variety of partners and commercial client organisations. You will have a passion for, and proven experience of, innovation in this space of healthy ageing and longevity, with an entrepreneurial focus on how to enable businesses to harness the opportunities related to longevity economies.

In addition to key project management tasks, you will be central to lead delivery teams and be responsible for delivery outputs for our clients. In particular, you will assess information needs through scoping with clients, conduct trend analysis and literature reviews, use proven methodologies to gather human experience insights around emerging technologies and consult with experts both internally and externally. With the support of senior staff, you will analyse and interpret data and knowledge from various sources to deliver meaningful outputs directly supporting the aspirations of the client.

Key Accountabilities

• Keep abreast of new developments and emerging trends in the area of ageing and longevity to identify and champion new opportunities.
• Develop relationships with commercial partners to provide expertise in the ageing and longevity sector to encourage and identify new areas for collaboration that focuses on innovation that aligns to the unmet need of an ageing population.
• Lead on scoping of new projects with clients to help produce project proposals that provide clear achievable deliverables and are appropriately costed.
• Carry out trend and market analysis and produce detailed outputs and reports that combine information from a variety of sources including consumer panels, large datasets and literature reviews.
• Provide effective project management of projects to plan and manage risks ensuring projects hit decision gateways and other identified milestones through continuous progress monitoring to time and budget.
• Act as the project lead responsible for a project team of staff focused on delivery for clients, with responsibility for all delivery outputs.
• Line manage, mentor, train and provide inspiration and advice for Innovation Associates undertaking similar work.
• Facilitate and moderate workshops and panels to gather citizen insights and human experience that communicate the needs of potential consumers.
• Act as key contact with Research Strategy and Development and the University contracting and legal departments to progress contracts, IP and legal matters, as appropriate for managed projects.
• Identify and liaise with other University staff and network partners to secure their commitment to elements of work for which they are required.
• Prepare regular reports and presentations and case studies of projects for the NICA management team, as well as other various stakeholders as required.
• Support for marketing and communications staff in the preparation of media and press releases or success celebration activity related to managed projects.
• Prepare for and facilitate any funder audits, inspections and client meetings as required.
• Take responsibility for identifying own learning needs, including identifying appropriate courses to ensure up to date knowledge in the area of ageing and longevity. The post-holder will very quickly be expected to develop a thorough knowledge of the work of the National Centre, its interactions with partner organisations and other stakeholders and the expectations of the Centre for delivery of economic growth and the support of productive ageing.
• Undertake routine tasks appropriate to the grade such leading key meetings and events, including constructing agendas, travelling to meetings, and advising on appropriate courses of action and ensuring action points are followed up.
• Any other duties as specified commensurate with the grade.

The Person

Knowledge, Skills and Experience (Essential)
• Ability to identify, collate, analyse and interpret multiple data and knowledge sources in the context of healthy ageing and longevity economies to propose solutions for clients and provide information for management use.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with proven experience and understanding of the opportunities and challenges of working in healthy ageing and longevity.
• Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability and enthusiasm to communicate with the public and negotiate, influence and build relationships with clients and partner organisations at all levels.
• Experience of working with commercial clients or other stakeholders to deliver projects from early scoping with responsibilty for high quality outputs with a keen attention to detail and presenting these back in the form of client reports and presentations.
• Proven experience of leading a team to deliver high quality outputs.
• Experience of gathering citizen insights and human experience through a variety of methods such as surveys, workshops and citizen panels.
• Creative thinker, able to develop novel ideas independently.
• Excellent planning and organising skills to manage multiple projects in a dynamic environment working within general guidelines, using initiative and judgement without recourse to senior staff to deliver to time and budget.
• Ability to prioritise and, where necessary work on a range of projects simultaneously.
• Excellent teamworking with a positive and supportive attitude and a flexible and collaborate approach to working with colleagues across the university.
• Proven experience of a range of IT programmes, especially Microsoft Office.
• Understand the importance of confidentiality within an innovation environment.
• Comfortable working in a “start-up” environment and willingness to contribute to wider organisational problem solving.
• Willingness to travel nationally and internationally as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience (Desirable)
• Highly desirable to have experience of health outcome measures.
• Experience of working with industry or commercial partners in a consumer and/or patient involvement capacity.
• Previous experience of working and delivering in a fast-paced consultancy type environment.
• Experience of costing and pricing activity.

Qualifications (essential)
• Educated to degree standard in a scientific, social science, technology discipline or similar or an equivalent qualification and/or significant appropriate work experience
• Advanced knowledge of project management and relevant business operating procedures (eg contract approval, financial understanding, project close out, etc).

Qualifications (desirable)
• Project management qualification (e.g. PRINCE2 or other Agile Project Management)
