The Role

To work collaboratively with colleagues in the Student Wellbeing Service to strengthen and further develop the provision available for students with a range of psychological and emotional difficulties. To provide time focused counselling, 6 session model, initial assessments, occasional crisis management support, consultancy for staff, students and third party stakeholders. The role also involves working to promote positive preventative interventions through the further development of training and support for University staff. There may be opportunity to co-facilitate a variety of group interventions.

This is a part time post working 2 days per week, 1pm – 9pm during term time only for a fixed term period of 12 months.

Key Accountabilities

To manage a varied and complex caseload of students with a range of emotional and psychological difficulties, including the need tooffer one to one therapeutic intervention using brief intervention approache:

e.g. Solution Focused therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Counselling, Motivational Interviewing etc.provide a comprehensive assessment of students’ needs and participate in operation of the initial assessment system

  • occasionally be available for staff, students and third party stakeholders who require guidance on a range of mental health issues
  • offer occasional crisis management support and referral of students to external agencies where required
  • maintain electronic student records
  • co-facilitate group work where appropriate
  • act as a link between the student and statutory and non-statutory agencies
  • work with a multi-disciplinary team approach within the Student Wellbeing Service
  • be involved in outreach work where appropriate
  • To occasionally liaise with academic staff in relation to students’ study needs and how students’ difficulties may impact on academic progress
  • To respond quickly to provide support and guidance to staff working with students with emotional and psychological difficulties, including acute mental health crisis situations
  • To develop and promote guidelines and information for University staff on accessible curricula and the practicalities of working with students with mental health and other difficulties
  • To provide training, formally and informally, to groups of staff to facilitate a better understanding of students’ emotional and psychological difficulties and how to support them
  • To work in conjunction with colleagues in planning, designing and implementing a range of workshops relevant to staff/student need, this includes induction sessions to schools
  • To keep up to date with changes in legislation, government policy, research etc. and act as an information resource to the University on matters relating to emotional and psychological difficulties and mental health
  • To build on existing links with external mental health services, local GP surgeries and other NHS services
  • To work collaboratively with all SWS colleagues and take a proactive approach to change
  • To be prepared to work in flexible and non-traditional ways e.g. occasionally assisting academic staff in containing student distress in an academic environment
  • To attend individual supervision and SWS team meetings
  • To work occasional unsociable hours to meet the needs of the Service.

The Person (Essential)

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • A proven record of delivering support to young people
  • Ability to assess risk and manage crisis situations
  • A high standard of professional skills appropriate to working with people with a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties
  • Capacity to deal with highly sensitive and complex issues
  • Ability to deliver short term focused individual work and to facilitate group work
  • The ability to conduct telephone therapy
  • The ability and or willingness to be trained to conduct therapy via digital means i.e. online, Skype
  • Working therapeutically with people with emotional and psychological difficulties
  • Evidence of providing a comprehensive assessment of an individual’s difficulties and needs
  • Experience of crisis management and coping with stressful and sometimes life threatening situations
  • Evidence of experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Management of own caseload
  • Experience of working with groups
  • Multi/Inter- cultural work experience
