Assistant Safety and Laboratory Technical Officer

Grade 6: £29,176 – £34,804 p.a.
We are seeking to appoint an Assistant Safety and Laboratory Technical Officer. The position is to support the Safety and Laboratory Technical Manager and to provide help and advice to a safety apprentice within a team environment. This will involve helping to implement, strengthen and review the University’s Health and Safety policy across the Department of Biochemistry and to other University Departments within the building. As well as dealing with servicing and repairs of equipment, it is expected that the appointee will also provide help and advice to staff and students within the building on certain pieces of equipment and take on other responsibilities that may arise. This will require good communication and time management skills, and attention to detail, to deal with the responsibilities of the position as laid out in the job description.
Applicants should possess a Degree in a scientific or technical subject, or have equivalent work experience and should have good knowledge of health and safety legislation, particularly within a scientific laboratory environment. You will have a proactive approach and have the ability to support colleagues with the application of health and safety processes and procedures. Experience of repairing, servicing and maintenance of laboratory equipment to the University’s and legislative safety standards is essential, as is having experience of working with liquid nitrogen. You will have experience of working in radiation laboratories and be able to offer specialist technical advice on radioactive use. You will be self-reliant with the ability to plan and organise your own administrative activities and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
This full-time permanent post is funded by the Department of Biochemistry and is based at the Department of Biochemistry, South Parks Road, Oxford OX1 3QU
This position is graded on the University’s grade 6 scale. The actual starting salary offered will be based on qualifications and relevant skills acquired and will also be determined by the funding available.
