This is an exciting opportunity for a Laboratory Manager to join the Ashcroft group and contribute to our research in insulin secretion and diabetes. Specifically, our lab aims to investigate how a rise in blood glucose stimulates the release of insulin from the pancreatic beta-cells and what goes wrong with this process in diabetes. We have a particular interest in metabolism.

The successful applicant will assist with the day-to-day general management of the laboratory including the management of the group’s mouse colonies. They will also be providing support for research students, postdoctoral research scientists and visitors to the laboratory.

Responsibilities will include general laboratory management and administration, including stock control of laboratory consumables, writing and/or updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for shared equipment usage and general laboratory practices, and managing the general laboratory budgets and the purchase of new laboratory equipment to agreed budgets. They will also be expected to manage the mouse colonies which includes breeding and maintaining, performing specialised animal husbandry and maintaining accurate records including entering into a computerized database.

The successful applicant will need to hold a relevant first degree (or equivalent), together with some relevant experience; have excellent communication skills, including the ability to write text that can be published, present data at conferences, and represent the research group at meetings; and have the ability to manage own research and administrative activities. They will need experience of following and adapting protocols and selecting appropriate experimental methodologies and have previous laboratory experience.

The applicant must possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to work within established research programmes, hold a home office license and have experience of following and adapting protocols and selecting appropriate experimental methodologies.

The successful candidate will be based at the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics, specifically in the Burdon Sanderson Cardiac Science Centre, which is located in the Sherrington Building, Parks Road, Oxford, OX1 3PT.

The position is funded by MRC until 31st August 2022.
