Linux Security Lead

Assurance Directorate, Oxford

Grade 9: £48,835 – £56,587 per annum

This is an exciting opportunity to join our growing Information Security Team at the University of Oxford and help us protect ground breaking research. The University of Oxford is ranked amongst the best in the world and this role plays a vital part in keeping it that way. The Information Security Team ensures that the University remains secure whilst deploying leading-edge IT facilities to support the distinctive needs of those engaged in teaching, learning, research, administration, and strategic planning.

The University of Oxford is seeking an exceptional Linux security expert with proven experience in managing large heterogenous IT infrastructure to join the University’s security operations function. You will bring extensive operational experience to the OxCERT security team; take a leadership role in the development, and operation of internal systems; and offer expert consultancy across a wide range of University departments, projects, and initiatives.

You will lead the effort to continuously improve our security operations with a strong focus on automation in collaboration with the Head of Information Security Operations and the rest of the team. You will be responsible for strategic planning, design, implementation, and management of IT infrastructure to support OxCERT’s security functions.

Experience in managing information security risk and handling information security would be beneficial, along with a thorough understanding of the broader information security domains. However, if you are a strong expert in Linux and are considering a career switch into an information security role, please feel strongly encouraged to apply. OxCERT can provide the required security training for strong candidates.

OxCERT runs an on-premise Elasticsearch based SIEM solution, Intrusion Detection System (IDS), and a vulnerability scanning system as well as other open source and commercial tools. We are also in the midst of migrating to a container based infrastructure using Kubernetes. This role offers an excellent opportunity to be involved with this migration to containers.

In addition to the opportunity to work for one of the world’s leading research and educational institutions, the University of Oxford offers range of excellent benefits including training and development opportunities, a generous pension scheme, a range of travel schemes and excellent social and sporting facilities.

Please applying for this post, even if you believe you do not fit all the aspects of the job description, as your key skills may be the ones we are looking for. Feel free to contact kashif.mohammad@infosec.ox.ac.uk if you have any further questions about the role.

The closing date for all applications will be at 12.00 noon on Wednesday 19 January 2022.
