NLP Programmer, CDLI BPP Project

Oriental Studies Faculty, Sackler Library, St John Street, Oxford

Grade 5: £25,941 – £30,942 pa pro rata

We are seeking an experienced web programmer to support the development of the Cuneiform Digital Library Initiative ‘Broadening Participation’ Project (CDLI BPP). This project will update the physical and technical infrastructure for this unique academic resource, while the main home of the CDLI is migrated to the University of Oxford from UCLA.

This is one of three technical roles that will finalize the CDLI Framework beta version, which will be suitable for public use. The main tasks encompass finalizing our new search and browse features, consolidating data edition, and finalizing the interface implementation.

A large part of the underlying infrastructure of the new CDLI Framework involves natural language processing tools. The NLP programmer will be in charge of finalizing the integration of those tools into the Framework. This work will require extensive testing of our storing, edition and displaying/download of textual data and their annotations workflows. Example of tasks included will be: prepare automated tasks to automatically update files consumedby the SPARQL server, set up the workflow to align transliterations with annotations on update, connect various conversion tools in the backend so users can download texts and textual annotations in various formats, etc.

With experience as a programmer, and ideally as a Devops, you will demonstrate knowledge of Natural Language Processing. You will need to be able to identify best practice and learn quickly in the role, and show that you can work methodically with minimal supervision and solve problems effectively. Knowledge of Linked Open Data, PHP/HTML/CSS; Python; Mysql (MariaDB), Docker, Bash, and MVC frameworks would be an advantage, and a first degree is also desirable. Interest in Ancient Mesopotamia and its languages would also be helpful.

This position involves variable hours of work within a fixed period of employment up to and including December 2021.
