Postdoctoral Research Assistant in laser-driven plasma accelerators

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in in laser-driven plasma accelerators. Two positions are available.

The post is available initially for a fixed-term duration of 3.5 years.

This project will focus on developing plasma channels, and methods for controlled electron injection, for laser-driven plasma accelerators.

The successful candidates will undertake research into the underlying physics and operation of advanced plasma channels and/or the development of new methods for controlling electron injection into laser-driven plasma wakefields. This work will be undertaken within the research groups led by Prof. Simon Hooker (Department of Physics) and Prof. Martin Booth (Department of Engineering Science).

Duties will include undertaking original research within the scope of the research project; supporting the operation of our high-power laser facilities in Oxford; planning and undertaking experiments at laboratories in Oxford, elsewhere in the UK, and internationally; writing-up of results for publication and presentation at international events; supervision of graduate and undergraduate students, and providing day-to day support within the research group; ensuring that the group’s laboratories in Oxford are operated in a safe manner, and acting as deputy Safety Officer when required; assisting with writing reports required by the group’s funders; and assisting with applications for grant funding and for beam time at national and international facilities.

The post-holder will have the opportunity to teach.

Applicants should hold, or be close to completing, a PhD in plasma physics or high-power femtosecond laser science. They should have extensive experience of working with Class 4 laser systems, or with particle-in-cell codes, and they should have experience of presenting scientific results in peer-reviewed journals or at international conferences.

Previous experience of research on plasma accelerators, high-power laser guiding experiments, particle-in-cell codes, or experiments at large-scale laser facilities will be an advantage.

Candidates are expected to demonstrate experience of presenting scientific results and the ability to manage own academic research.
