Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Topological Data Analysis of Lung Cancer

Mathematical Institute, Andrew Wiles Building, Radcliffe Observatory Quarter, Woodstock Road, Oxford

Grade 7.1-7.4: £33,309 – £36,682 per annum

We invite applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on an exciting new project, applying methods from topological data analysis to study state-of-the-art histology data from lung cancer patients. The project is joint between the University of Oxford and the Crick Institute, London, and funded by the Mark Foundation. The position is full time, fixed term until 31st January 2023, and the post-holder will be based at the Mathematical Institute, working under the supervision of Professor Helen Byrne.

The successful candidate will work as part of a larger, multidisciplinary team, in collaboration with Professor Heather Harrington at the Mathematical Institute, and the experimental research groups of Professor Erik Sahai and Professor Charles Swanton at the Crick Institute, in London. They will apply methods from topological data analysis to quantify the spatial distribution of immune cells within lung cancers and understand how these are related to the architecture of the tumour’s extracellular matrix. The post-holder will write up their results for publication and participate fully in the activities of the research group.

Applicants will have, or be close to completing, a PhD in applied/computational topology, data science, mathematical biology or a related discipline. They will possess sufficient specialist knowledge in Topological Data Analysis, together with experience in computing and working with data, and have excellent communication skills, including the ability to write for publication, present research proposals and results, and represent the research group at meetings. Experience of, and enthusiasm for, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team is desirable, as is an interest in cancer biology.

We proudly hold a Race Equality Charter Bronze Award and a departmental Athena SWAN Silver Award, which guide our progress towards advancing racial and gender equality. As part of our commitment to openness, inclusivity and transparency, we would particularly welcome applications from women and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are currently under-represented in positions of this type at Oxford.

Please direct informal enquiries to the Recruitment Coordinator at the email address given below, quoting vacancy reference 154472.

Applicants will be selected for interview purely based on their ability to satisfy the selection criteria as outlined in full in the job description. You will be required to upload a statement setting out how you meet the selection criteria, a curriculum vitae including full list of publications, a statement of research interests, and the contact details of two referees as part of your online application. (NOTE: Applicants are responsible for contacting their referees and making sure that their letters are received by the closing date).

Only applications received before 12.00 noon on Monday 6th December 2021 can be considered.
