Postdoctoral Researcher in Electron Tomography

Sir William Dunn School of Pathology, South Parks Road, Oxford, OX1 3RE

Grade 7: salary in a range £32,817 – £38,017 p.a.

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, and self-motivated Postdoctoral Research scientist to join Dr Tanmay Bharat’s group, interested in the general area of electron tomography. We use electron cryomicroscopy (cryo-EM) and tomography (cryo-ET) to resolve structures of molecules inside and on prokaryotic cells at high resolution. Correlated light and electron microscopy (CLEM) and mass spectrometry (MS) are used to support our investigations into bacterial biofilms and prokaryotic surface layers. Further information about the group can be found here: https://bharat.path.ox.ac.uk/content/research.

The post-holder will be responsible for managing their own academic research and contribute to wider project planning, including ideas for new research projects. You will determine the most appropriate methodologies for cryo-EM / cryo-ET, and identify suitable alternatives if technical problems arise. The post-holder should be able to use specialist scientific equipment in a laboratory environment including Titan Krios, Talos Arctica electron microscopes, FIB-SEM, or cryo-light microscopes. Training will be provided to the post-holder to use these microscopes.

The post-holder should either hold or be close to completion of, a PhD/DPhil in in biology or related fields. You should have sufficient specialist knowledge of biochemistry, microbiology, electron microscopy or structural biology. You should have the ability to manage your own research and administrative activities. Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write text that can be published, present data at conferences, and represent the research group at meetings are essential.

This is a fixed-term appointment available for 1 year in the first instance. If you are interested in this role, and have the skills and experience we are looking for, please apply online. You will be required to upload a CV and supporting statement as part of your online application.

The closing date for applications is 12.00 midday on Monday 8th March 2021. Interviews (on line) will be held as soon as possible thereafter.
