Postdoctoral scientist – Integral Membrane Proteins Group
Centre for Medicines Discovery, Department of Biochemistry, South Parks Road, Oxford, OX1 3QU
Grade 7: Salary in range £33,309 – £40,927 per annum
We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Postdoctoral Scientist to take responsibility for a range of structural and functional biology projects, within the Integral Membrane Proteins Group at the Centre for Medicines Discovery.
You will take responsibility for a range of structural and functional biology projects, express proteins in insect and mammalian cells, optimise protein production methods, purify proteins, prepare crystals and cryo-EM grids. You will be responsible for biophysical and functional studies for the late-stage proteins. You will design experiments, mutagenesis, and comparative studies to identify the structural consequences of disease-causing genetic variants or ligand binding, analysis of data and preparation of manuscripts. You will work closely with the CMD colleagues, sharing information with them, and interact effectively with the lab head, other members of the membrane protein group and other groups in the CMD.
It is essential that you hold a hold a PhD (or close to completion) in a relevant area of structural biology, biophysics, or biochemistry, and have proven academic and/or industrial experience in biochemistry, biophysics, and/or structural biology studies of integral membrane proteins. You will have previous experience in using and optimising insect cells and/or mammalian expression systems, preferably of integral membrane proteins. You will have a proven record in preparation of high-quality research publications, including a demonstrable ability to write first-author publications for leading journals. Many of our projects involve close collaborations with scientists within Oxford, elsewhere in academia, and in Pharma companies, so excellent communication skills and an enthusiasm for working with others is essential.
Applications for this vacancy are to be made online and you will be required to upload a supporting statement and CV as part of your online application. Your supporting statement must explain how you meet each of the selection criteria for the post using examples of your skills and experience.
