Research Assistant in Antiviral Screening

Grade 6: £29,176 – £34,804 p.a.
We are seeking to appoint a Research Assistant to join the laboratory of Professor Nicole Zitzmann. This position will involve working on several projects in a virology laboratory, with a focus on anti-viral compound screening. The role will require close collaboration with other scientists and excellent team working skills. The main responsibilities will include maintaining the CL2/CL3 cell culture facilities of the group, performing anti-viral and plaque assays, qRT-PCR/RNA extractions, and supporting the work of the laboratory manager.
Applicants should hold a BSc degree in a relevant subject and have experience of working in a life sciences laboratory environment and in CL2 and CL3 cell culture facilities. You will have experience in working with viruses, assessing viral growth and performing titration and plaque assays, together with experience in extracting RNA and analysing qRT-PCR measurements. Experience in using data anaylsis software and using and updating databases is essential. You will also have previous experience of helping to drive research projects and presenting research data, as well as having strong attention to detail and excellent record keeping skills. Experience with flow cytometry and immunofluorescence microscopy is desirable but not essential.
This full-time fixed-term post is funded for up to 12 months and is based initially in the Rodney Porter Building of the Department of Biochemistry, South Parks Road, Oxford.
This position is graded on the University’s grade 6 scale. The actual starting salary offered will be based on qualifications and relevant skills acquired and will also be determined by the funding available.
