Research Associate in the Economics of Nature-based Solutions

Grade 7: £32,817 – £40,322 p.a.

We are seeking a researcher to work on a project aiming to bolster the evidence for how nature-based solutions (NbS) can contribute to short-term economic recovery and long-term economic development in the Global South, including through job creation, boosting economic product, and supporting adaptation. The project will enhance the understanding of the economic recovery potential of investments in nature to inform economic, climate, and sustainable development policy for the Global South. This project will provide much needed impetus for mainstreaming nature-based solutions in development policy and practice by elucidating the relationship between investments in nature, and economic development outcomes. The position will be embedded within the Oxford Martin Programme on Biodiversity and Society.

The successful candidate will primarily analyse data on the economic recovery potential of investments in nature made by multilateral development banks globally. Within the outlined scope on the economic recovery potential of NbS, you will have the opportunity to explore and refine research questions with the project team. You will manage your own academic research and administrative activities in a highly independent and proactive manner. You will be engaging with stakeholders and leading and producing impactful peer-reviewed publications.

You will hold, or be close to completion of, a PhD, or have equivalent experience, in (a) economics, or (b) a social science discipline with either a strong focus on ecosystem-based approaches/nature-based solutions, natural resource management, or conservation, in the context of environment and development policy. You will have previous experience of contributing to publications/presentations and willing to lead. You will demonstrate strong analytical skills and be comfortable working across concepts and methodologies in the social and natural sciences, including the ability to work across disciplines, in diverse teams. An understanding of quantitative and qualitative analysis methods, including working with an existing dataset of economic recovery policies; with a commitment to build necessary expertise in either, depending on expertise and project needs is essential.
