Research Facilitator (Maternity cover)

Radcliffe Department of Medicine, Level 6, West Wing, John Radcliffe Hospital

Grade 7: £33,309 – £40,927 p.a.

About the role

We have an exciting opportunity to join the Research Strategy and Funding team in the Radcliffe Department of Medicine (RDM), providing maternity cover as a Research Facilitator. The RDM has a large and diverse portfolio of funded research projects spanning diverse research areas. Securing research funding is increasingly difficult in the ever changing and highly competitive world of research. Therefore, it is essential that researchers are given as much support as possible when applying for funding to ensure they submit strong and competitive grant applications.

Working alongside, and reporting to, the Research Strategy Co-ordinator, you will play an important role in providing researchers with timely information about upcoming funding opportunities, supporting researchers applying for internal and external funding, assisting in implementing the research related activities in the Athena SWAN action plan, and assisting with initiatives to promote collaborative research within the Department.

You will act as the Operations Manager for the Novo Nordisk – Oxford Fellowship Programme, working closely with and reporting to the Programme Manager. Your responsibilities will include dealing with the day to day running of the programme, recruitment of new fellows and budget oversight. With nearly £17m of funding, this programme extends beyond RDM to include researchers in the Medical Sciences Division and in the Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Division, whose research has a focus on diabetes, cardiometabolism, liver and renal disease. The programme aims to train the next generation of researchers through awarding postdoctoral fellowships.

Whilst the role is a grade 7 position, we would be willing to consider candidates with potential but less experience who are seeking a development opportunity, for which an initial appointment would be at grade 6 (£29,614 – £35,326 p.a.) with the responsibilities adjusted accordingly. This would be discussed with applicants at interview/appointment where appropriate.

This is a full-time post (37.5 hours per week), however we would consider a part-time appointment (minimum 0.8 FTE) with a commensurate adjustment in the responsibilities and duties. There may be some flexibility with the start date, preferably starting in February/March 2022.

About you

You will hold a PhD/DPhil or equivalent qualification, in a biomedical discipline (if underfilling; hold a Bachelor’s or higher degree or equivalent qualification, in a biomedical discipline). You will possess an understanding of the funding landscape in the UK, alongside an understanding of the funding needs and challenges faced by researchers. You will also have experience of project management and handling budgets. You will have excellent communication skills (both oral and written), and excellent interpersonal and networking skills. You will have an ability to think strategically, combined with a willingness to undertake basic tasks and work with care, precision, and meticulous attention to detail. You will also need to be able to work both independently and as part of a team, taking initiative and making decisions when required. Previous experience of research facilitation/management within either a higher education or research institution, or a research active company in the private sector would be desirable.
