We are seeking a Research Fellow to work on Oxford Net Zero, a new initiative drawing on the University’s world-leading expertise in climate science and policy, and the NEGEM H2020 project, which is funding this position. The initiative will provide research and new resources for policymakers and businesses at this critical juncture for international action on climate change. This work will identify and develop, with our academic and stakeholder partners in the project and building on existing relationships with companies in challenging sectors such as Oil and Gas, novel business models and policy instruments to incentivise the deployment of negative emissions technologies in general, but particularly capital-intensive and capital-starved options such as geological carbon storage that appear to be essential for achieving a sustainable net zero, and explore their implications in global and regional IAM-based scenarios.

The successful candidate will lead the “commercial potential” work package in the NEGEM project, identifying novel commercialisation pathways for negative emissions in the context of adaptive net zero mitigation scenarios informed by a regular stocktake process. You will also independently lead novel research under the Oxford Net Zero initiative interpreting existing decarbonisation scenarios, identifying assumptions and constraints and developing novel policies and business models for achieving net zero emissions, with a particular focus on business models applicable in the Global South or in Resource-rich Economies. You will regularly write research articles at a national level for peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, reviews and present papers and lead seminars to disseminate research findings. You will initiate and develop funding proposals, including identification of opportunities, to contribute to income development and sustained longer-term funding of the initiative.

You must hold a quantitative Doctoral degree in a climate-related discipline. Applicants from physical climate science backgrounds would be welcome, but will need prior experience in climate change economics or scenario analysis and development. You will have a track record and enthusiasm for publications in high-quality academic journals and the ability to raise research funds through making grant applications. Willingness to think imaginatively about novel business models to incentivise the transition to net zero emissions, and consider how these could be represented in the next generation of IAMs is essential.
