Grade 6/7: £29,614 – £40,927 per annum (with a discretionary range of up to £44,706 per annum) This post may be appointed at either Grade 6 or 7, depending on experience.
The Larsson-Rosenquist Foundation Oxford Centre for the Endocrinology of Human Lactation (LRF OCEHL), based at the Nuffield Department of Women’s and Reproductive Health, is seeking an experienced, enthusiastic and motivated midwife to work alongside Prof Fadil Hannan (Principal Investigator) and contribute to the set-up, co-ordination, and facilitation of high-quality clinical research studies characterising the endocrine and genetic basis of lactation. In particular, the midwife will be involved in the following research studies:
– INSIGHT study, which is investigating maternal hormones triggering the onset of lactation within the first few days after childbirth. Participants will be recruited to the project in a secondary care setting, and have a follow-up visit by the research midwife or clinical research assistant in their own home.
– Oxfordshire Lactation Survey (OLS), which is an online survey investigating the prevalence and underlying causes of lactation insufficiency.
– LactaGene study, which plans to identify and recruit women with severe and familial forms of lactation insufficiency for whole exome/genome analysis in order to detect genetic variants influencing human milk production.
The LRF OCEHL team, comprises a team of medical doctors and scientists undertaking ambitious translational and clinical research into the hormones mediating human milk production. The goal is to develop novel biomarkers and also establish therapeutic targets for the clinical management of women with lactation insufficiency.
The post holder will provide specialist advice to participants on all aspects of their involvement in clinical research studies. This includes explaining what participating in the study involves, receiving written informed consent, advising on and reporting of any adverse events, and ensuring cost effective use of resources.
The suitable candidate must be an NMC registered general midwife with relevant post registration experience and have an extensive midwifery or nursing background. You must have either previous research experience or an interest and understanding of clinical research and the ability to develop and implement quality control processes to ensure the collection of high quality data.
You must be able to demonstrate knowledge and experience relating to Health Research Authority Research Ethics Approvals and NHS Permissions for a clinical study and have an understanding of how NHS Research Governance applies to clinical studies/trials. Good communication and organisation skills, computer literacy, accuracy and the ability to work independently and unsupervised are also essential for this role.
In addition, we require the post holder to be flexible in organising working hours and to travel to and conduct home visits.
The post is offered on a full-time basis and is fixed term for one year in the first instance.
