Job Details

Sherardian Professorship of Botany

Department of Plant Sciences in association with Magdalen College

Applications are invited for the Sherardian Professorship of Botany, tenable from October 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter.

This is an exciting time for Biology at Oxford. The Department of Plant Sciences will merge with the Department of Zoology to form a new Department of Biology in 2022, and will then move into the new £200m Life and Mind Building which is due to open in 2024. This will provide state-of-the-art laboratory facilities for plant sciences and a new home for the Oxford University Herbaria, complementing the current extensive facilities at the John Krebs field station and Wytham Woods.

The Sherardian Chair was established in 1734 and is one of the most prestigious in the UK. The University seeks to appoint an individual of the highest calibre, with research interests that will strengthen current activities in the newly-formed Department of Biology. Preference will be given to applicants with a strong background in plant developmental biology.

As the Sherardian Professor, you will be expected to lead a substantial research programme that will contribute to the Department’s standing as a leading centre for plant biology; to provide leadership in research and teaching in biology, and to contribute effectively to ensuring the long-term development of the subject in Oxford and its wide recognition outside.

You will have an international research reputation in plant sciences and be able to demonstrate dynamic, forward-thinking and feasible future research plans, and a record of attracting research funding from outside bodies to run a major research group. You will also have the experience and ability to teach and supervise effectively at both undergraduate and graduate level and to support the professional development of early career researchers.

This professorship is associated with a non-stipendiary fellowship at Magdalen College. The Sherardian Professor also serves as Keeper of the Oxford Botanic Garden.

For more details about the post and full application instructions, see the Further Particulars document via the link below.

The closing date for applications is 12 noon GMT on Thursday 10 March 2022.

Applications are particularly welcome from women and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts in Oxford.
