About TASO

The Centre for Transforming Access and Student Outcomes (TASO) is an affiliate What Works Centre, and part of the UK Government’s What Works Movement. Our vision is to eliminate equality gaps in higher education (HE). Our mission is to improve lives through evidence-informed practice.

TASO was set up in 2019 within King’s College London and became an independent charity on 1 April 2021. Our work focuses on the generation, synthesis and dissemination of high-quality evidence about effective practice in widening participation and student outcomes. We primarily focus on developing and disseminating causal evidence (categorised as type 3 in the Office for Students’ Standard of Evidence).

The Role

TASO  is looking to recruit a Senior Quantitative Researcher to join our Research and Evaluation (R&E) team. The post-holder will report to the Deputy Director (Research) and play a cross cutting role across the team, providing expert support on quasi-experimental evaluations and randomised controlled trials to identify what works to reduce inequality in HE.

Among other responsibilities, the role will include:

  • Quality assuring analysis and evaluation plans. Providing quality assurance both internally to the R&E team (e.g. to code and analysis), and to work that TASO has commissioned from external evaluators (e.g. to research protocols).
  • Conducting in-house data analysis. Providing data analysis (ideally using R) for short-term in-house projects addressing inequalities in HE.
  • Project managing impact evaluations. Overseeing and managing a suite of evaluations, including quasi-experimental impact evaluations and randomised controlled trials, working in partnership with universities and external evaluators.
  • Internal capacity building. Supporting and upskilling the team in conducting complex analysis and using large administrative datasets to support the organisation’s mission.
  • Upskilling HE practitioners in evaluation, analysis and use of data. Working with colleagues in the R&E team to produce external resources and training to support the sector to deliver robust evaluation.
  • Shaping the centre. Working with colleagues and the senior management team to refine TASO’s processes and policies, specifically those relating to data management.

The attributes we are looking for in a Senior Quantitative Researcher 

Applicants will be expected to demonstrate their skills and experience against the following criteria in their written application and at interview, for those short-listed.

Knowledge and Experience

  • High level of expertise in analysing quantitative data for impact evaluation. Must be proficient using R or Stata.
  • Comprehensive experience of leading randomised controlled trials and/or quasi-experimental evaluations (ideally in educational settings), and capability to conduct power calculations and matching.
  • Experience working in a research organisation and working creatively to overcome statistical challenges.
  • Training in econometrics or statistics for impact evaluation.

Skills and abilities

  • An ability to make analytical decisions independently and rapidly, and to consult with experts or more senior colleagues when needed.
  • Ability to work at a fast pace and to tight deadlines where appropriate.

Initial Terms and Conditions of Appointment

• Remuneration: £40,000-£50,000 pa – depending on experience

• Location: Central London. Following government guidelines for working during COVID-19. Scope to work from home up to 2 days per week. Candidates must have the right to work in the UK.

• Term: Permanent. We welcome responses from either full-time or part-time applicants. We will also consider candidates who have a preference to work free-lance or more flexibly (e.g. alongside a PhD).
