Duties and Responsibilities

The Department of Mathematics of UCL invites applications from candidates for the post of Associate Professor in Applied Mathematics. The successful candidates will be expected to conduct a vigorous, high-level research programme in applied mathematics, including publishing in peer-reviewed journals and supervising PhD students, and be active in seeking to obtain external income to support their research. They will contribute to the teaching of courses and the supervision of projects at undergraduate and postgraduate level, and provide outstanding pastoral care and support to students. They will work collaboratively, fairly and equitably with colleagues from different backgrounds, recognising the expertise and skills brought by each.

The responsibilities of the post will include: carrying out research in the area of applied mathematics; submitting publications to refereed journals; participating in local seminars and in national and international conferences; contributing to the educational provision of the department; and continuing our progress towards equality, diversity and inclusion. We particularly encourage applications from those who can supervise student projects in the areas of mathematical modelling applied to society, healthcare and biology.

The department has internationally recognised research groups in pure and applied analysis; fluid mechanics; mathematical physics; geometry and topology; algebra, number theory and combinatorics; mathematical modelling in biology, finance, industry and society.

UCL Mathematics is committed to developing the careers of all its academic and professional service staff by providing a supportive environment enabling them to flourish. Our achievement is recognised by an Athena SWAN Silver award, support of the London Mathematical Society Good Practice Scheme and excellent results in recent staff surveys on questions related to equal opportunities. The Department actively promotes UCL’s work-life balance policy which acknowledges that its staff are most productive when they have achieved a work-life balance that enables them to meet their responsibilities outside work.

The post is available from 1 September 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter.

This is an open ended role.

Key Requirements

The successful candidate will have a PhD or equivalent qualification in applied mathematics or related area, and an established track record of international research excellence and publishing in applied mathematics. They will be able to demonstrate leadership in their research field, reflected by major publications, invited papers at international conferences and awards, as well as have a record of successful supervision and mentoring of graduate students and postdoctoral research staff. They will have experience of teaching mathematics at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level, together with a commitment to excellence in teaching, and the ability to teach using remote working technologies. They will show a commitment to work collaboratively, fairly and equitably with colleagues in different roles and from different backgrounds.

An outstanding candidate will have a strong record of attracting external funding to support research activity, as well as a clear vision for the potential impact of their research. They will have experience in improving accessibility or equality of opportunity in an academic setting, some experience of curriculum and programme development, and have evidence of contributions to peer review bodies/committees, professional organisations, learned societies, government committees or Research Councils etc.
