Duties and Responsibilities

The Sainsbury Wellcome Centre (SWC) brings together world-leading scientists to investigate how brain circuits process information to generate perception, form memories and guide behaviour. Developed through the vision and partnership of the Gatsby Charitable Foundation and Wellcome, and with substantial investment from these partners, the mission of the SWC is to generate experimentally testable theories of brain function.

The SWC Fabrication Laboratory (FabLab) designs and manufactures experimental scientific equipment, supporting the requirements of the 12 scientific research groups.

The Innovation & Research team work collaboratively and in close partnership with scientists, holistically integrating electronics, mechatronics and software to create products that empower new research.

As an Innovation & Research Engineer, you will collaborate with scientists, developing interdisciplinary engineering solutions that empower novel scientific research. You will be an innovative thinker, able to devise novel concepts and translate them into practical solutions.

This post is funded until 31 October 2025 in the first instance.

Key Requirements

We are looking for a candidate with expert knowledge and experience in mechanical engineering design, and appreciable knowledge and experience of electronic controls and systems.

A strong knowledge of mechanical engineering fundamentals and design for manufacture is required for this role. Experienced application of 3D CAD for production of solid models, system assemblies, detailed 2D manufacturing and assembly drawings is essential.

You will enjoy working on diverse projects, within a multi-disciplinary team environment, both as a team player and as project owner. You will be adept in presentation of ideas and concept designs. You will also enjoy hands-on manufacture of devices, both mechanical and electronic, and subsequent commissioning of devices to the lab.

This role would suit someone who is passionate about being involved in the whole R&D lifecycle.
