Duties and Responsibilities
Applications are invited for a full-time Professor of Materials Science at the Institute for Materials Discovery, University College London (UCL). The postholder will provide academic leadership for the expansion of IMD to the new UCL East site in Stratford and help to develop strategic research and teaching in advanced materials within the Institute and beyond. The successful applicant is expected to: (1) pursue world-leading and world-changing original research in advanced materials; (2) play a pivotal role in the development of successful research project proposals in pursuit of major UK and international funding opportunities in materials creation, discovery and development research; (3) develop and delivery high quality curricula in computational materials science and data driven materials discovery; and (4) champion the interdisciplinary research and industrial-led projects in advanced materials.
The professor will contribute to the research and teaching culture and profile of the Institute of Materials Discovery and the Faculty of MAPS.
To promote excellence in research, teaching and administration of the Institute for Materials Discovery. To undertake academic and administrative leadership and management at senior level.
The postholder will have the opportunity to develop their own research, including building up a collaborative research focus. Additionally, they will be expected to:
conduct a high-level original research programme in advanced materials research and provide international leadership in this area, ensuring that this research has an impact on practice, as well as contributing to the development of theory in these areas;
perform innovative and cutting-edge research to develop material models and novel artificial intelligence computing tools to perform materials modelling, data mining, machine and deep learning of the complex relationships of materials-structure-processing-properties for the discovery of new nanostructured materials, renewable energy materials and electronic devices to increase industrial innovation;
discover, and design technologically important novel materials with desirable properties and functionality, together with the selection of manufacturing processes and optimization of processing parameters for the next generation of low cost, eco-friendly and high performance functional materials and devices;
combines advanced computer modelling methods with characterisation techniques in the study of new solid state materials for “clean energy” applications, including solar cells and fuel cells, batteries, and solid-state lighting;
setup integrated computational strategies based on a combination of different approaches, including Density Functional Theory (DFT), Time-Dependent DFT and GW methods incorporating relativistic effects
generate large-scale external incomes to support research programmes of the appointee and junior colleagues;
publish regularly in top-ranked journals, and participate in, or organise national and international conferences and symposia, including with industry partners;
provide training and supervision for research students and academic collaborators; and
develop collaborative links within and outside UCL involving both academia and industries at national and international levels.
Development of, and participation in teaching programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level:
lecturing, tutoring and dissertation supervision; and
assisting with the recruitment and selection of students.
The postholder will:
actively follow UCL policies, including equality, inclusive and diversity;
maintain an awareness and implementation of Fire and Health & Safety Regulations;
carry out the duties in a resource efficient way and actively support UCLs Sustainability Strategy, policies and objectives within the remit of their role;
carry out any other duties and responsibilities within the scope, spirit and purpose of the post and its grading as requested by the line manager; and
line-manage and offer mentorship and development to less experienced colleagues.
We are seeking an individual with an international reputation in the field of advanced materials as well as a strong track record of high impact scholarly publications in materials science.
The successful applicant should also be able to demonstrate a strong track record in delivering high quality of teaching at postgraduate level and ability to perform management and administrative duties at senior level to a high level of competence and reliability.
