Duties and Responsibilities

The appointee will work as a Research Fellow on the qualitative elements of data (from design to dissemination) for a randomised control trial of the Both EARS training package (BEARS) to maximise hearing abilities in teenage bilateral cochlear implant users, funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).

The post will involve assisting in the development and running of pre-trial Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) workshops, managing the design and conduct of baseline and post-training interviews during the trial period, and thereafter, managing the transcription and analysis of interview data.

The post-holder will lead on effective management of the qualitative data and take part in regular BEARS project meetings. The post-holder will contribute to dissemination of the project methods and findings through presentations at conferences and preparation of written reports and papers for publication.

This appointment is available from 1st January 2022 and is funded for 3years (at 1.0 FTE) in the first instance or for an equivalent duration, employing two Researchers on a flexible part-time basis ( at 0.5 FTE) with the possibility of extending for a further year, subject to funding.

Key Requirements

The appointee must have a PhD in a relevant discipline, and experience in working with deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children, young people and/or adults. The project involves qualitative methods; the candidate must therefore have excellent data management and thematic analysis skills; possessing excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at research assistant Grade 6B (salary 32,217 – 34,867 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
