Duties and Responsibilities
The Bartlett Development Planning Unit (DPU) conducts world-leading research and postgraduate teaching that helps to build the capacity of national governments, local authorities, NGOs, aid agencies and businesses working towards socially just and sustainable development in the Global South. It is concerned with promoting sustainable forms of development, understanding rapid urbanisation and encouraging innovation in policy, planning and management responses to the economic, social and environmental development of cities and regions, especially in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
The DPU wishes to appoint a Research Fellow to work closely with the DPU Director, Prof. Michael Walls, in developing research proposals and generally supporting Prof. Walls in developing research consistent with his research portfolio focus on the Somali Horn of Africa. She or he will be based at the DPU in London, though work may be undertaken remotely where required and by mutual agreement. The preferred candidate will be an early career scholar with a PhD degree and a record of research in fields related to the political economy of Somali areas and issues of identity and experience amongst Somalis both in the region and in the Somali diaspora.
The post is initially a 12 month contract.
The successful candidate be educated to A PhD in a subject relevant to development in the context of Somali institutions and/or communities in the Horn of Africa and/or elsewhere.
Knowledge of the fields of scholarship at DPU and in particular with regard to the intersections between identity, justice, governance and development, plus a willingness to deepen this knowledge through interdisciplinary scholarship.
Please note: appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at research assistant Grade 6B (salary 31,542 – 33,257 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
