Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will join PI Rachel Hillers team to work on the cross-sector implementation of NICE-recommended CBT-based interventions for young people in care: Framework development and pilot of trauma-focused CBTs study. Young people who have been removed from the care of their biological parent(s) and placed in out-of-home care have far higher rates of mental health difficulties compared to their peers. For example, young people in care are five times more likely to meet criteria for a mental health disorder compared to their peers, and are overrepresented in unemployment, homelessness, and prison statistics. Such outcomes are not inevitable. With the right support, young people in care can and do thrive.

The project includes a) the development of an implementation framework via a scoping review and consultations; b) a pilot study of the implementation of routine screening of PTSD for young people in care and the use of tf-CBTs; and c) the mapping of mental health service provision for young people in care in England.

This is a national pilot project, funded by the Applied Research Collaboration network. The successful candidate will join a large collaborative research team spanning multiple Universities and Trusts. In addition to the postdoctoral Research Fellow post, the project includes three Research Assistants.

The Research Department of Clinical, Educational and Health Psychology undertake world-leading research and teaching in mind, behaviour, and language. It brings together researchers in a range of disciplines such as developmental psychology, clinical psychology, psychoanalysis, neuroscience, health, education, communication, medicine, behaviour and development. The Department is a vibrant environment for both study and research. UCL is the top-ranked university in the UK for research in Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience.

The postdoctoral Research Fellow will take a lead on the implementation aspects of the project. The role will include support for finalising ethics applications and protocols, liaising with sites (including CAMHS, specialist CAMHS, third-sector, and social care), support of junior researchers on the project, data management, recruitment and consenting of participants (young people and clinicians), conducting qualitative interviews and quantitative assessments, administrative support, and data analysis, write up, and coordination of knowledge exchange activities.

The candidate will be primarily based in London, although the role is likely to involve travel and some overnight stays for meetings and assessments (pending covid-19 restrictions and considerations).

This is a 2 year full time post, in the first instance.

Key Requirements

The successful candidate will have a PhD in Psychology or a DClinPsy with strong research experience. They will have experience of researching within children’s social care and/or mental health services, or similarly complex organisations. They will be skilled in qualitative interviewing, transcription and analyses and have excellent verbal and written communication skills. They will also demonstrate commitment to UCLs policy of equal opportunity and the ability to work harmoniously with colleagues and students of all cultures and backgrounds. A DBS check will be carried out before the successful candidate starts the role.
